DAY, WILLIAM
1800-1860
HAMILTON CO. FLA.
William Day was born in New York in 1800. About 1825 .he decided to come south, and coming by boat he landed at Darien, McIntosh Co. Ga., where he found work and lived about five years. He was there in 1827 when he drew land in the 1827 state land lottery. From there he went to Hamilton County, Fla., about the same time that William Bassett, Josiah Baisden and others moved from McIntosh to Hamilton County. He was married twice. His first marriage was in Hamilton County, April 28, 1833, to Nessie Hall, daughter of Thomas Hall. She was born 1812 in Laurens County, Ga., and died in Hamilton County, 1851. By her five children were born:
1. James H.b. 1834, died single in C.S. Army.
2. Josephb. 1836, died single in C.S. Army.
3. Thomasb. 1840, died single in C.S. Army.
4. Williamb. 1845, m. Sarah Dorman.
5. Nancyb. 1847, m. William Sauls.
The second marriage was on Sept. 24, 1852, in Hamilton County, to Nancy, daughter of Edmund Mathis (Vol.1). She was born in 1812 in Bulloch County, Ga., and died in February, 1897, at the home of her son, Stephen Day, in DuPont, Clinch Co. Ga. She was buried at Prospect Church near DuPont. By her three children were born:
6. Carolineb. 1853, m. Ist. Rowan B. Johnson; 2nd. Guilford A. Register.
7. Stephenb. 1855, m. Isabella Benton, dau of Rev. E. J.
8. Rebeccab. 1856, m. Thomas J. Bryan.
Mr. Day served as a County Commissioner of Hamilton County, 1851-53 and again 1855-59. He also served as Clerk of the Circuit Court, 1857 until his death in 1860. After his death his widow and her children moved to Clinch County, and made their home with her brother, Tyre Mathis (Vol.II), for some years; and after the children were grown she lived a while with Mrs. Bryan in Hamilton Co. Fla., and later with her son, Stephen, at DuPont in Clinch County.
Mrs. Day was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church, uniting with Union Church Oct. 11, 1840, at its "arm" on Cow Creek, in what was then Lowndes County. She and her parents transferred their memberships and became organizing members of Wayfare Church on Cow Creek in April of 1841. On July 19, 1856, as Mrs. Day, she was dismissed by letter, and transferred her membership to Bethel Church, Hamilton County. After moving back to her old home-section she transferred to Prospect Church near DuPont, April 12, 1862. She then transferred to Hebron Church, Hamilton County, July 10, 1869, but on May 7, 1870 was dismissed by letter from Hebron and received back by letter Aug. 13, 1870, into Prospect Church, of which she remained a member until her death.
Stephen S. Smith was appointed administrator of the William Day estate, Nov. 10, 1860.

JONES, James
1772-1844
CHARLTON
JAMES JONES was born in Effingham County in 1772, and was a son of John Jones and his wife Mrs. Mary Powell Jones. The marriage of his parents is recorded in Effingham County and shows they were married September 15, 1769. They had two children, James Jones and Civility Jones; the latter married Isham Walker (q.v.). John Jones was a Revolutionary soldier and was granted 287-1/2 acres bounty land, in Washington County, by the State of Georgia, January 3, 1785; and died about 1790. Deed Book "B", pp. 13-14 of Effingham County shows a deed from the widow to her two children, James and Civility, dated October 30, 1793, to 50 acres of land and all her household goods, furniture, cattle, etc. The late James B. Jones of Waycross, a grandson of James Jones, said the family moved to Georgia from North Carolina and that his grandfather died at the age of 72 years of Bright's disease.
James Jones came to Camden County when about grown. He is found there on the 1794 tax digest of that county. On May 2, 1804, he was commissioned lieutenant of the militia in the 28th District, Camden County. Isham Walker and his wife, Civility, were residents of Camden County about the same time. The Walkers and Jones families lived in the western portion of Camden County, territory now in Charlton and Brantley counties, also lived a short while over in Glynn County. James Jones and his family also lived a short while over in Nassau County, Florida. Soon after the formation of Ware County in 1825, he moved to that county (portion now in Brantley County) and record is found of his commission as ensign in the 590th district of Ware County November 22, 1825, and as 2nd Lieut. in same militia district May 16, 1832.
Mr. Jones lived a short time in Wayne County, where he was Justice of Peace of the 28th District, 1811-1812. This district was formerly in Camden but was annexed to Wayne and is now in Brantley. He served as one of the Justices of Inferior Court in Ware County, 1827-1829. Record is found of a James Jones elected one of the first Appling County Justices in 1820, but this is thought to have been another James Jones who married a daughter of William Smith, R.S., of Ware County. The two James Jones were not related.
The wife of James Jones was Nancy Delk, born 1779, in North Carolina. She spent her last years with her son, James, Jr., and died after 1850. The late James B. Jones said she died at the age of 80 years. The children of James and Nancy were:
1. Nancyb. 1798?, m. (unknown). After marriage, moved to Mississippi and died there at age 45 years (auth: J. B. Jones).
2. Elizabethb. 1800?, m. (unknown). After marriage moved to Hamilton Co., Florida, where she died age 35 years (same auth.).
3. Burrellb. 1803, m. Margaret (Peggy) Mizell, daughter of Jesse, R.S, of Camden County.
4. Nathanielb. 1805, m. Keziah Johnson. Moved to Alachua County, Florida.
5. Harleyb. 1807, m. Louisa Cason. Moved to Nassau Co., Florida. Served in Florida Legislature, 1854. Died March, 1867.
6. Harrietb. 1811?, m. (unknown). After marriage moved to Columbia Co., Florida. Died there age 80 years.
7. Jamesb. 1814, m. (1) Sarah Mizell, daughter of Jesse, R.S. (2) Jane Albritton, daughter of Thomas.
James B. Jones said his grandfather Jones, he thought, was buried at Spanish Creek Cemetery in Charlton County. The original Jones home was about seven miles from Burnt Church in original Camden, now Charlton County. The widow was thought to have been buried at High Bluff Church, in present Brantley County.
James Jones served in Capt. William Cone's Company of Camden County militia in 1838 in the Indian War.
