In January 1826, he built his log home, a sturdy and comfortable home that he occupied until his death about fifty years later. This home was on the Coffee Road, main thoroughfare of travel in those days from middle Georgia into southwest Georgia and Florida. It was a stagecoach stop where the horses were rested. Many people in those pioneer days enjoyed the hospitality of the Mathis home.
Mr. Mathis was ensign of the militia in the 658th district, 1828-1840, and Justice of Peace, same district, 1829-1834; and Justice of Berrien Inferior Court, 1861-1862. Mr. Mathis was a member of Pleasant Primitive Baptist Church into which he was baptized about 1840, but later transferred his membership to Salem Chruch which is now in the City of Adel. His wife was a member also. He died about 1875 and his wife died soon after. They were buried at Pleasant Church.

Edmond Mathis, Sr.
Edmond Mathis of Duplin County, NC has thousands of descendants throughout the Southeast, through his nineteen children who lived to be grown; also the ancestor of all Mathis descendants in Wiregrass, GA. Though never a resident of Georgia, his grandsons, John and James lived and died in "Wiregrass Georgia" and they themselves have an estimated several thousand descendants in Wiregrass Georgia and over in Florida. Edmund Mathis, the subject, was born about 1720 in Isle of Wight County, VA, son of Ezekiel who died in 1738 in Isle of Wight County, testate. Edmund may have come over from Wales as an infant. Edmund married Mary "Mollie" Price in Virginia, a daughter of Rice Price. She died after September, 1803, age 78 years. They had twenty-two children but three of them died either in infancy or very young, and their names have not been preserved. With the extensive list of children it may be that Mary was a 2nd wife. Birth-years for the nineteen are not available except for James b. 1764, Eady, b. 1768, and Thomas, b. 1770.
Edmund Mathis and wife not long after marriage moved to Southampton Co., VA where he was granted 135 acres of land south of the Nottoway River; he sold this to Nathaniel Ridley Jan. 8, 1745 (deed book 7, p. 218) and moved to Duplin County, NC, where bought land and settled, later granting from the State 93 acres on Sept. 26, 1766, 100 acres on north side of Six Runs, same date (land lying now in Sampson Co., NC); 150 acres on Dec. 11, 1770; 200 acres on May 24, 1774; 640 acres on July 22, 1774. Most all this land, if not all was cut off into Sampson County when it was made out of Duplin in the 1780s.
Edmond Mathis and several of his sons were faithful Whigs in the Revolutionary War. He served 2 ½ years as a musician in Captain Turner's Company, North Carolina Militia, enlisting April 25, 1776, being discharged Aug. 10, 1778, for which service he was allowed pay in 1783. Muster-ground for the militia in Duplin now Sampson County, was on Edmond Mathis plantation, and was mentioned in the Revolutionary War pension application of Scott Rich. Edmond Mathis was commissioned as a Justice of the Peace on Nov. 29, 1766 in Duplin County, and served several years in that office.
Edmund passed away around 1783 and was interred on his plantation in NC.
Edward Fennel was appointed Administrator of the Edmund Mathis estate in Sampson County, NC in August 1794 and the estate was divided in 1798

General Notes: Husband - Edmund Mathis Jr.
Edmund Mathis was born in Duplin County, NC in 1776. He is a son of Rice Mathis and Civility Goff. Edmund was married in 1798 in North Carolina to Miss Unity Register, b 1778, daughter of John Register, of Sampson County. About 1800-05 Edmund and Unity together with her father's family moved to Bulloch County, Georgia, where they settled and acquired land through grants and purchase. The couple had five known children.
Record is found in Bulloch County where Edmund Mathis was drawn for grand jury service, April Term, 1812, 1813, and other terms, and as a petit juror December 1807, November 1809, and November, 1810. He was granted 500 acres of land on the North side of Lotts Creek, Jan. 9, 1808. After his removal to Appling County he sold three hundred acres of this tract to Timothy Bryant, Jr., of Bulloch County, Sept. 23, 1826 (Deed Book 5K, page 53, Bulloch County). Other deeds appear on record to and from him.
After leaving Bulloch County, Edmond Mathis and family moved first to Glynn County, where they lived for a short while. He was Justice of the Peace in the 25th District, Glynn County, 1818-1819. In the winter of 189-1820, he moved to the new county of Appling and settled on the Little Satilla River near Fellowship Baptist Church. He served as Justice of Peace in the 442nd District, Appling County, 1822-1828.
In the winter of 1827-1828, Edmond Mathis and family moved, this time to Lowndes County, establishing their home on Lot 485, 10th District in present Lanier County, east of the Alapaha River. After living here a few years the family moved again, this time to Hamilton County, Florida, in 1832. Mr. Mathis apparently did not like the country there and moved back to Lowndes, locating in the 661st (Naylor) District where he was Justice of Peace, 1838-1841. The Indian War came on and he served in 1838 in Capt. Jesse Carter's Company of the Lowndes County militia.
In 1842, Mr. Mathis and wife and daughter (The three sons all being married at this time) moved to Ware County (now Clinch) and located on land lot No. 151, 12th District, which was only three miles from the then Lowndes-Ware County line. After living there until his wife's death in 1853 he sold out to his son Tyre Mathis, and spent his last few years with Tyre and his family. Tyre Mathis subsequently bought Lot of Land No. 125, 7th District of Ware (now Clinch), and moved there. It was there that Edmund died in 1860. He was buried at nearby Prospect Church. His wife was buried at Wayfare Church.
Edmund and his wife were originally members of the Fellowship Baptist Church in what was then Appling County, which church they were members of in 1825 and before. He bore the church's petition in October, 1825, to the Piedmont Baptist Association, seeking admission into the Association. He was elected in October, 1825, as Associational delegate from the Piedmont Association to the Hephzibah Association. Mr. And Mrs. Mathis were received into Union Church, Lowndes County, April 12, 1828, by letter from Fellowship Church. On June 12, 1830, he was ordained a deacon in Union Church and continued as a deacon the remainder of his life. On June 9, 1832, Mr. And Mrs. Mathis, having removed to Hamilton County, Fl, joined others of the Union Church in a request for that church to establish an "arm" at Tiger Swamp Meeting-house in Hamilton County, near their homes. The request was granted. The next year the "arm" became an independent church named "Concord" and Deacon Mathis and wife were among charter members. Having moved back to Lowndes County, they were received back by Union Church by letter from Concord, Sept. 6, 1839. Two years later he settled in Ware County as already stated, about three miles distant from Griffin Mills on Cow Creek which was then just over in Lowndes; and Deacon Mathis and wife joined with others in asking for their letters that they might form a new church at a meeting-house which was called Mathis Meeting-house which had been erected near the mills and was a result of Deacon Mathis' efforts to establish a place of worship in the community. Their letters were granted April 10, 1841, and a month later the new church was formally constituted and named Wayfare, and Deacons Mathis became one of the first deacons. Mrs. Mathis died in 1853 a member of Wayfare, and on May 6, 1854 her husband was granted a letter of dismission and when Prospect church was constituted Jan. 22, 1859, he became one of the organizing members. The next year, he died a member. He is buried at Prospect Church in Clinch County (grave unmarked).
