General Notes: Husband - Algernon Solomon Richard Milton

Algernon Solomon Richard Milton was born in Burke County, Georgia in 1798. He is the son of Captain John Milton and Hannah Elizabeth Spencer. Born 6 years before his famous father's death and at a time of family financial troubles. A. S. R. Milton was described as 5' 6 ¾ inches tall, dark complexion, dark hair, and blue eyes. He married Jane Hardin daughter of John Hardin. Solomon and Jane had seven children.

It appears A. S. R. Milton fought in the Seminole Wars 1817-1818 as a Lieutenant in the 1st Regiment (Milton's) Georgia Militia based on a Index to compiled Service Records of Volunteer Soldiers Who Served During Indian Wars and Disturbances 1815-1883.

Solomon probably left Jefferson County shortly after 1836 and we cannot find him in the 1840 Census anywhere in Georgia, though he removed to Appling County, GA. He was convicted of rape in Appling County, GA. and sentenced to five years in the penitentiary. Received at prison 20 December 1845 at the age of 48 and paroled 28 August 1848.

We did find him in the 1850 census for Appling County in Militia District 456, where he owned no property. In 1860 he was enumerated in the Southern District of Appling County, GA.

He was said to be a "great hunter."

He was killed in the Civil War during the Battle of Olustee in North Florida, as he moved from Georgia to near Baldwin, FL before the war. He died sometime during Feb. of 1864.

14. Minettab. 1844, m. William H. Bennett.

Mr. Harnage resided in Liberty County, 16th district, until 1825 when he moved to Decatur County with his brother-in-law, Jeremiah Shaw (Jr.), and others of the Shaw family. In 1832 or 1833 Mr. Harnage, Jeremiah Shaw, Daniel Shaw and their families moved back to Lowndes County through which they had migrated to Decatur. They settled in the present Ray City district of present Berrien County, in the same community where Martin Shaw, an older brother, had already settled. After living there about ten years George Harnage and family moved to Ware County and settled near the Lowndes County line, and he lived there until his death April 27, 1895.

In 1850, in the creation of Clinch out of Ware and Lowndes, Mr. Harnage and family were cut into the new county.

He was commissioned 1st Lieutenant in the 16th district militia of Liberty County, June 1st, 1825. He was a private in Capt. David R. Bryan's company of Lowndes County militia in the Indian War of 1838, and also served in Capt. Levi J. Knight's independent militia company.

Mr. Harnage and wife united with Pleasant Primitive Baptist Church by baptism about 1834, and in 1843 they transferred their membership to Wayfare Church, nearer their homes, and they remained members there until their deaths. For forty years prior to his death he was a deacon in Wayfare Church, being ordained about 1854. The exact date of his ordination is not shown by the church minutes. The minutes show that on August 1, 1872, he was at his own request relieved of the active duties of the deaconship on account of age and infirmities.
The son, Jeremiah Harnage, enlisted May 1st, 1862, in Company "G", 50th Georgia Volunteer Infantry Regiment, and was killed in action at the battle of Boonesboro, Maryland.
