Noah H. Driggers

Noah H. Driggers was born in 1832 in South Carolina. There is no record yet found that explicitly lists his parents. However, he is listed at age 18 on the 1850 census in the household of John Capers Driggers and his wife Nancy after all of their children. Since he would have been too old to be their son, it is likely John was a relative.

In 1857, he purchased 160 acres of land in Alachua, FL. In 1859, he married Martha Stokes. They had one son, Edmund, in 1860.

Noah served in the Confederate Army, but eventually switched sides and joined with the Union. He enlisted on 4/2/1862 at Gainesville, FL as a Private. On 4/2/1862 he mustered into "D" Co. FL 7th Infantry

He deserted by joining the US forces on 10/14/1864 at Rock Island, IL.

After the war, he and Martha had one more son, Riley, in 1868. It appears that Martha may have died in child birth. It also appears that Edmund died at some point. By the 1870 census, Noah is listed as a single father with his 2 year old son Riley living in Brooksville, FL.

Some time in the next year, Noah met and married Lydia Crews. The marriage record did not survive a fire at the Hernando County courthouse. Lydia gave birth to 11 children, 3 of which died very young (J.M., Charlie, and Tryphena J.). The other 8 children consisted 5 sons (Henry A., Samuel Mitchell, Wesley Evan, Addison Albert, and John Capers) and 3 daughters (Agnes Eugenia, Annie Elizabeth, and Barbery Frances).

In 1881, Noah was granted 160 acres of land spanning Hernando and part of Citrus County by the US government for his service.

Noah died on November 30, 1895 and is buried at New Church Cemetery in Brooksville, FL.

After his death, his wife Lydia eventually auctioned off the land he owned and moved the family to Pinellas County.

General Notes: Wife - Lydia Crews

Born Lydia Crews. She married Noah Driggers in 1871. She gave birth to 11 children, 3 of which died very young.

After Noah died in 1895, she remained a widow for over 20 years before remarrying. In 1916, she married a Thomas Jefferson Davis Allen while living in Safety Harbor with some of her children.

She died in 1919 after being ill for a few years, and though she is buried next to Noah per her and her children's wishes, her headstone still reads, "Wife of T.J. Allen," likely at his doing.
