General Notes: Husband - Samuel Register

REGISTER, Samuel
1786-1869
CLINCH

SAMUEL REGISTER, ancestor of practically all of the name in Wiregrass Georgia and over in Florida, was born in Sampson County, North Carolina, December 1, 1786, a son of John Register, R.S., and a grandson of Benjamin Register, R.S. The 1790 Census of Sampson County shows three John Registers as heads of families there at that time; two of these three drew pensions as Revolutionary soldiers and died in Sampson County; the third John was the father of the subject, and while he fought in the Revolution according to what some of his grandchildren said, still it cannot be verified as there is no record in North Carolina of any John Register in the Revolution except the two who drew pensions. John, the father of the subject, moved to Georgia between 1800 and 1804, and the family is found in Bulloch County in 1804 and after.

Samuel Register married Elizabeth Skinner, born April 5, 1789 in Cheraw District, South Carolina, and died in Clinch County, Georgia, August 20, 1871. To her and Samuel Register were born fourteen children all of whom lived to be grown and married:

1. Zilphlab. 1807, m. John Tomlinson (1st. cousin, son of William.
2. Eady (Edith)b. 1809, m. Thomas Mathis. Died February 10, 1869.
3. Guilfordb. 1811, m. Priscilla Ann Devane, daughter of Francis.
4. Davidb. 1813, m. Matilda McDaniel.
5. Williamb. 1814, m. Luraney Harnage, daughter of Jacob.
6. Johnb. 1819, m. (1) Elizabeth Cowart, daughter of William B. (2) Mary Ann Fiveash, daughter of John.
7. Rebeccab. 1821, m. Rev. Hillery Cowart, son of William B.
8. Phoebeb. 1823, m. Zachariah Lee, son of Joshua.
9. Jincyb. 1824, m. Moses C. Lee, son of Jesse.
10. Ivyb. 1825, m. Leta Patten, daughter of James M. No issue.
11. Samuel E.b. 1826, m. (1) Seneth Lee, daughter of Jesse (2) Mrs. Mary E. Hutto-Douglas (3) Josephine Guthrie, daughter of Samuel.
12. Elizabethb. 1828, m. William Patten, son of James M.
13. Reubinb. 1830, m. Harriett Brown of Florida.
14. Marthab. 1834, m. Hillery P. Mathis.

After living in Bulloch County about twenty years, Samuel Register and his family moved in 1824 to Appling County. They resided there until 1828 when they moved further south to what was then Lowndes County but now Berrien County, and settled on what is known in late years as the farm of the late J. S. Shaw near Ray City. About 1840 Mr. Register sold out and moved to where the town of Stockton, Lanier (formerly Clinch) County, is located. There he bought lands and had a large plantation. In 1850 he was cut out of Lowndes into the new county of Clinch. In 1858 when the new Atlantic & Gulf Railroad (now the A.C.L.) was surveyed through, it came through Mr. Register's land where he lived. He laid out a town site and sold off lots in a town which was named "Registerville" but which was changed by the railroad authorities about 1865 to "Stockton". All the children by that time being grown and married and none with their parents who were growing old, they sold out their home in the new town about 1865 and went to live with their son, William, who lived on lot of land No. 158, 12th District of Clinch County some twelve miles southwest of Homerville. There they spent their last days. Mr. Register died April 8, 1869. Both he and his wife were buried at Wayfare Church, about four or five miles south of Stockton.

Mrs. Register was received by letter into Union Church, September 13, 1828, from Fellowship Baptist Church, Appling County, and was dismissed by letter April 10, 1841 from Union to participate in constituting a new church nearer their home and now known as Wayfare. She died a member of Wayfare Church. There is no record of her husband's membership.

In 1949 a movement was set on foot to raise funds to erect a permanent memorial at the graves of Samuel and Elizabeth Register at Wayfare Church, which movement eventuated in the formation of "The Register Family Association". Hon. Marcus S. Patten of Tifton, 87-year-old grandson of the pioneers, was elected President. Plans were made and funds raised for the memorial and a big reunion of descendants now estimated to number no less than 8,000-10,000, was held at old Wayfare Church April 30, 1950. 2,000 descendants attended. It was perhaps the largest family reunion ever held in Wiregrass Georgia. The addresses of most of the descendants could not be learned, hence they were not notified.

Samuel Register drew land in 1827 land lottery as a soldier in War of 1812.
