SEARS, HARRISON.
1797-1873 CLINCH
Harrison Sears was born in Montgomery County, in 1797, a son of John Sears, R. S. He was married in Laurens County, March 2, 1815, to Harriet Tully (or Tullis) born in this state in 1799. They had the following children:

3. Johnb. 1825, m. Mary Williams, dau. of John.
4. Needhamb. 1826, m. Clarissa -----. Lived in Montgomery Co.
5. Mary (Polly)b. 1828, m. Shadrach Mills.
6. Elizabethb. 1832, m. James L. White.
7. Mariab. 1834, m. John L. Crews.
8. Jamesb. 1836, m. Nancy Elizabeth Crews, dau. of W. B. (Vol. 1).

Harrison Sears lived in Laurens County for a year or so after marriage, then moved to Appling County early in 1820, settling in present Atkinson County. He was cut out of Appling into Ware County in its formation in 1825, and then out of Ware into Clinch County in 1850 when Clinch was made. In 1854 he was cut out of Clinch into Coffee County, but about two years later moved back to Clinch County his son Matthew having moved there and bought lot of land 503, 7th district, and located there. Harrison Sears occupied a place on the same lot across the creek west of his son. Both farms were cleareo out of the primitive woods and fenced and put in cultivation. The son lost his life in the Confederate Army, and his widow moved back to Coffee County, while Harrison Sears and his wife (they by that time were living alone, all the children being grown and married) moved to a farm near his son-in-law, Mr, Strickland. His wife died about 1870, Mr. Sears then moved down on the Suwannee River in Clinch County and lived there with his son, James, dying there in 1873, His remains were brought back and buried by his wife on the old B, F, Booth form in what is now an abandoned cemetery where no graves were ever marked.
Harrison Sears was a member of Cassia Lodge, No, 224, F. & A, M., at Homerville, transferring his membership there In 1866, He was lodge tyler in 1868, and was demitted Sept, 10, 1872, He was unaffiliated at his death.

John Staten, the father of Barzilla Staten (Vol. 1), was born in Effingham County in 1775. He was married there August 8, 1794 to Penelope Sellars, daughter of Samuel Sellars. To them were born three chidren:

3. Elizabethb. 1798, m. John J. Johnson.
About 1806-1808, John Staten and family, his widowed mother, his wife's widowed mother and his wife's brother, Samuel Sellars, and others of the family connection, moved from Effingham County to Tattnall County where they located. John Staten granted 975 acres of land in the fork of Cobb's Creek, built his home there, cleared up a farm, and lived there until his death in 1814. The widow and the son, Barzilla, and daughter, Mrs. Branch, sold their interest in this property, 975 acres, to John J. Johnson (who by law owned his wife's share of the property); deed dated April 6, 1819 (deed book ABC, page 227, Tattnall County.) The widow and son, Barzilla, and Mrs. Branch then moved to Appling County where she is shown as head of a family in 1820 census. She died in Appling County about 1835.

Joseph Sirmans was born in Bulloch County May 16, 1808, a son of Josiah Sirmans (Vol. 1). He was married in 1829 to Rebecca daughter of Rev. William Smith, R.S., (Vol. 1) of Ware, later of Clinch County. She was born in November 1811 in Liberty County. By her twelve children were born. She died December 20, 1852, and Mr. Sirmans the next year married Mrs. Sallie Howell, daughter of Isaac Burkhalter (Vol. 1) and widow of Thomas Howell. She was born January 8, 1815 and died September 21, 1887. By this marriage, one son, Isaac Sirmans, was born. The thirteen children of Joseph Sirmans were:

2. Hartyb. 1833, m. Berrien Pafford.
3. John J.b. 1835, m. Katherine McLean. Died in C.S.A.
4. Joseph J.b. 1837, died about 1861, single.

Mr. Sirmans was cut into Clinch County when it was formed in 1850 partly out of Lowndes County. His home was in the 586th militia district. He served one term, 1873-1874, as Representative from Clinch County in the legislature.
Mr. Sirmans was a member of Union Primitive Baptist Church originally. He was received and baptized prior to 1832 (exact date not shown by church roll), and his wife was received and baptized August 8, 1841. They were dismissed by letter February 14, 1847, and united with the newly-formed Bethany Church nearer their home.
Joseph Sirmans died October 7, 1888. He and his wives were buried in the Fender Cemetery.
