ALLEN, JOHN, Jr.
1785-1840
Barnwell, South Carolina.

John Allen, Jr., while never a resident of Georgia, was the father of several children who moved with their widowed mother to Lowndes County, Georgia, about 1834. He married Miss Ann Bryan, born 1790 in South Carolina, a daughter of Joseph Bryan. She died in Lowndes County after 1850.

John Allen, Jr., the subject, was a son of John Allen, Sr., R. S., who died 1826 in Barnwell County, South Carolina. The latter served in the South Carolina militia during the Revolutionary War. To John and Ann Allen were born the following known children:

1. Normanb. 1804, m. Elizabeth Howell, daughter of Joseph Howell, R.S.
2. John M b. 1805, m. Eliza Wilkinson.
3. Richardb. 1807, m. Sarah.
4. James b. 1809, never married.
5. Hansfordb. 1811, m. Nancy Wilkinson.
6. Paul b: 1815, wife, if any, unknown.
7. William b. 1819, m. Mary A. Walker, daughter of James.

Mr. Allen made a bill of sale as a gift to Joseph Bryan as trustee for Mrs. Ann Allen, his wife, conveying a number of slaves that had been inherited by Mrs. Allen; instrument dated July 9, 1817; (see Book 4-0, page 65, Miscellaneous Records, South Carolina Hist. Com.). Mr. Allen died in Barnwell County in 1829, and Robert Goode was appointed administrator on his estate and qualified December 7, 1829. Relationship of Goode, if any, unknown.
The Barnwell County deed records shows the following: (1) Deed to Moses Smoke, dated December 25, 1835, from Mrs. Ann Allen, conveying 557 acres on Lemons Swamp, being part of 1000-acre tract granted James Allen August 1, 1814. Memorandums attached, one of which dated February 19, 1838 by Hansford Allen, saying he had rescinded his action in signing, by reason of being a minor. William Allen on November 5, 1841, signed statement that he was under 21 years of age at the time of signing the deed but now being of legal age, ratified it. John Allen being out of the state, the instrument was signed by Richard Allen as his agent. (Deed Book AA, page 61, Barnwell County). (2) Mrs. Ann Allen, John, Richard and William Allen make deed to George W. Smoke, January 17, 1840, for 500 acres of land on Lemons Swamp in Barnwell County. William Allen being under age at the time, ratified it November 5, 1841. (Deed Book AA, page 508, Barnwell County). (3) Deed of Gift from Mrs. Ann Allen to her son, Paul, dated November 7, 1836, for a third part of 780-acre tract (Deed Book V, page 8, Barnwell County).
John Allen, son of the subject, was the first of the family to move to Lowndes County, and was followed later by his mother and brothers. All of the brothers moved to Lowndes County except Paul who seems to have remained in South Carolina.
