ALTMAN, JESSE
CSA ca.1815-ca.1900 PIERCE (GA) BAKER (FL)
Jesse Altman was born in Wayne County, Georgia in 1815, and was a son of Thomas and Lucy Leigh Altman (Vol.Vl).
Jesse grew up in Wayne County and lived there until 1837 when, after the death of his father, his mother with most of the children, moved to Ware County. They lived in that part of Ware that became Pierce County.
It was about this time that he married Nancy Elizabeth Cason, born in 1819 in Appling County. She was the daughter of Frederick Cason (Vol.V). By her, he had seven children. She died about 1852. His second wife was Easter (or Hester) Crews, the daughter of Micajah Crews (Vol.1). She was born about 1839.
Mr. Altman left his second wife and eloped with Mary M. Altman (born ca. 1845), the oldest daughter of his brother, Jacob Altman (Vol. VII) and moved to Baker County, Florida for two or three months and then returned to Pierce County. About 1875, he returned to Baker County, Florida. It is not known when he died, but in later years he left Mary and returned to the Schlatterville community in present Brantley County. Mary M. Altman is shown in the 1900 Census of Baker County with son, George A. This record shows her born in December of 1844 and that she had been married for 25 years and was the mother of 8 children; five of whom were living. This would indicate that Jesse was still living but that they were living apart.
Jesse Altman served in the Indian Wars as a private in Capt. James Walker's Company from June 9th to August 19, 1838, and in Capt. James Jones' Company from August 21 to September 15, 1840. Both of these enlistments were in Ware County.
Jesse Altman was the father of the following children; the first seven by Elizabeth Cason, the second six by Hester Crews and the balance by Mary Altman:
1. Harrietb. 8/18/1837, m. Cornelius "Neil" Barker, d. 4/3/1914. Oct. 1856, Both buried at Big Creek Baptist Church, Bacon County.

17. Sarahb. 1877, m. William R. Raulerson
18. Thomasb. 1879, m. unknown.
19. George A. b.1882, m. unknown.
The son, Samuel, was killed September 14, 1862 in battle at Boonesboro, Maryland. He was a Private, enlisting in Company "A", 50 G Regiment., May 2, 1862.
Jasper enlisted as a Private in the same Company May 4, 1862 and is shown A.W.O.L., February 9, 1864.
Jesse, Jr., moved to Baker County, Florida about 1880. His widow, Nancy, is living adjacent to Mary M. Altman in 1900. Nancy Johns Altman was born October 6, 1852 and died May 26, 1918. She is buried in North Prong Cemetery in Baker County, Florida.
It is not known when Hester (or Easter) Crews Altman died, nor where she is buried. Mary M. Altman died sometime after 1900, probably in Baker County, Florida.
Census records - 1850 Ware; 1860, 1870, Pierce, 1880, 1900, Baker County, Florida.
Note: The information in this sketch was taken from Judge Huxford's card files on Jesse Altman and from Census records. It is not clear as to which of the last groups of children were born by Mary M. Altman. The Court records of Pierce County indicate that by April of 1869, Jesse Altman had fathered two children by his niece, Mary M. Altman. The 1900 census indicates that she had been the mother of eight children, which conflicts with the above sketch. It is possible that Mary should have been listed as a widow in 1900.

18. Thomasb. 1879, m.
