CAMDEN
Captain William Cone, son of Maj. William Cone (above), became a very celebrated Indian fighter and an influential citizen of Camden County and later of Columbia County, Florida. He was born in North Carolina, December 24, 1777. He grew up in Effingham County. He was twice married. His first marriage was in 1800 to Miss Jane Cason, daughter of Hillery and Sarah Cason of Screven County. They however soon separated, and he moved with his parents to Glynn County (now Camden), and was subsequently married to Miss Sarah Haddock, born 1788 in Georgia, daughter of John Haddock. To William and Sarah Cone were born:
1. Keziahb. June 11, 1811, m. James Walker February 2, 1827.
2. Daniel Newsomb. October 9, 1814, m. Amy Long. Died December 6, 1841
3. William Haddockb. July 15, 1825, m. Sarah E. Branch.
4. Simon Peterb. November 6,1827, m. Maria _____.
5. James Barnardb. November 21, 1829, m. (1) Sarah Lee (2) Ada Hart.

Capt. Cone was elected Representative from Glynn County in 1804. The next year, by the legislative act adding a part of Glynn to Camden, he became a resident of Camden County. On February 7, 1806, he was commissioned Justice of Peace in the 35th district, Camden County, and on Muy 14, 1808, he was commissioned captain of the militia in the same district. He commanded his company of militia in the War of 1812, defending Camden County from British invasion; in that conflict he showed unusual military skill. In 1807 he was elected Representative from Camden County, serving the following terms by re-election: 1807-1808, 1818, 1819, 1820-1821, 1822, 1823, 1825, 1833, 1834, 1836, 1837, 1838, 1839. He was Justice of Peace in the 270th district, Camden county, 1829-1830, and was captain in the same district, 1817-1825. In the Indian War in 1838 he organized a volunteer company of Camden county militia, and was its Captain, participating in the Okefenokee Swamp campaign that year with much credit to himself.
In 1840, Capt. Cone sold out his holdings in Camden County and moved to Columbia County, Florida, settling a few miles out from White Springs near the Suwannee River. He served two terms in the Florida legislature from his county. He also continued to distinguish himself in the Indian War which continued to rage in Florida three or four years after the Indians were driven out of Georgia.
Capt. Cone died at his home in Columbia County, August 24, 1867. His wife survived him for fifteen years, and died in Nassau County, Florida, January 11, 1872. They were buried in the cemetery at Prospect Primitive Baptist Church in Hamilton County, Florida
