General Notes: Husband - William Cason

CASON, WILLIAM
c1695-1764
NORTH CAROLINA

William Cason, the ancestor of almost all the Casons in "Wiregrass Georgia" and North Florida, was born in Princess Anne County, Va., c1695, and is believed to be a son of James Cason who died there in 1723. William was the administrator of the said James Cason's estate. He seems to have sold his inheritance in 1723 as it was at that time he moved to Beaufort County, N.C., where he settled in the portion that later, in the 1760s, became Pitt County. He granted land in Beaufort County in 1740, the same bordering on a stream called "Cason's Run" and George Moye's land. The 1746 Colonial tax records of Beaufort County shows William "Casson" (or Cason) a tax-payer with nine people in his household.

William Cason's wife was named Jane but nothing further is definitely known about her other than she was dead by 1758 when William made a deed of gift to three of their children, Henry, Hillery and Elizabeth. The 1760 tax records show him living with his son, James, and in 1762 with son Hillery. He died in Pitt County about 1764. William and Jane were the parents of the following children (list may be incomplete):

1. Williamb. 1723,m. Hester Duncan. Moved to Duplin Co. N.C. and lived in portion now Sampson Co.
2. Cannonb. 1725-11779, m. Rosa Whitehurst?. Died in Fairfield Co. S. C.
3. Jamesb. c1727,m. -----Watkins, dau. of William.
4. Johnb. 1730,m - ------ Pinkston, dau. of Thomas, Moved to Ga.1793;d.1816.
5. Henryb.1732,m - ------ Cannon, dau. of George.
6. Elizabethb.c1735,m.(Unknown).
7. Hilleryb.1737,m. Sarah ------- Moved to Screven Co. Ga., 1793;d.1814.

William and Jane Cason are the ancestors of several thousand people in South Georgia and North Florida and seemingly of all Cason descendants in these areas with the exception of Ransom Cason (Vol. II) who, while he could have been a descendant seems to have been a greatnephew.

NOTE: Thanks are due Mr. E.L. Williams of Valdosta and Wm. R. Cason of Atlanta, descendants, for their indefatigable work in tracing what appeared to be for many years an untraceable family due largely to poorly-kept public and family records and loss outright of records.

This is an original compilation, not heretofore published.
