While searching the Mary Ann Crews/Seaborn Johns connection, I came across this piece from Ann Crews Hance which is too good to pass up:

James Crews (1819-1890) Son of Alexander Crews and Lucy Dubois, born in South Carolina. What a twisted tale this guy has to offer! The factual portion is that he did marry his cousin Susan Crews, daughter of Isham Crews and Mary Johnson. Another fact is that after Susan's death, he immediately married a 16 year old girl named Cecelia. What we do not know for certain is whether he is the same James Crews I have found on the 1880 Census married to yet another young girl, Mary Cooper. Even more scandalous than the 16 year old Cecelia, Mary was only 14 at the time of marriage and had given birth to young Freeman Crews. James may also have been married to yet another cousin previous to Susan; Sarah Crews, but that marriage did not produce any offspring.Based upon the Family Data Records as well as the US Federal Census Records, we know that James and Susan had at least 8 children; 6 girls and 2 boys. Mary Ann, Susannah, Randall, Nancy, and Matilda appear with James and Susan in Ware County, Georgia on the 1850 census. By 1860, Susan has died and James (age 50, but listing himself as 44) has marked that both he and Cecelia (who is 16) were married within the year; she is listed as his wife. Some of his children are still listed as living at home with him and "step mom" Cecelia; Mary Ann (who is 19), Susan (18), Randal (15), Nancy (14), Mitchell De Jane (who I believe is Matilda, age 11), Julie Ann (10), Martha Ann (8), and James (4). I can not imagine the humiliation felt by Mary Ann and Susannah, both older than their new "step mother", not to mention young Randal who was only 1 year her junior.I am unable to find a credible entry for James Crews in 1870, the reason for this may be that at the time he was involved in the military and his children may have been looked after by various family members. At this time I have no solid evidence of his military actions, however, several sources have mentioned that he was involved in the following:? Military Service: 14 SEP 1840 Cambridge Co. GA militia under Capt. H.E.W. Clark ? Military Service: 27 AUG 1840 Ware County militia under Capt. James Jones. Both are previous to 1870, however, assuming he was a military man, there is the possibility that he was involved in further actions in the 1870's.The last record I was able to locate for James was the 1880 US Federal Census. All of the children he had with Susan would have been long grown, however he is now listed with a new wife, Mary (35 years his junior). They have one child, Freeman, who is 12; making Mary about 14 years old when she gave birth to him in 1868. The 1880 Census is from Wayne County, Georgia and the James Crews is listed as having been born in exactly 1819. Other sources also cite James having been married to "Mary" as well, however, the Crews family was a large one and many cousins were present all over southeast Georgia with "James" being a popular name. There is no real way to prove whether or not this is him \endash but most evidence indicates that it was.Oh yes… and he was also a Farmer.*Portions of then Wayne County are now Brantley County, Georgia.Other Sources Include:Title: Ann Crews.ged.FTW Note: Source Media Type: Other Repository: Author: Brøderbund Software, Inc. General Notes: Husband - Jesse Howell

HOWELL, JESSE
1793-1860
ECHOLS.

Jesse Howell, ancestor of a large family connection of Wiregrass Georgia and Florida, was born in Barnwell District, South Carolina, in 1793, a son of Joseph Howell, R.S. He grew up and married in Barnwell District and lived there until 1839, when he sold his farm there and moved to Georgia and located in what was then Lowndes but now Echols County. Here he lived until his death in December 1860.
Mr. Howell was married three times. His first wife was a daughter of David and Mary Lightsey of Barnwell District. They were married in 1816. She died in 1831. The second wife was Mary Caroline Copeland, born 1812, a daughter of Aaron Copeland, R.S., of Barnwell District and sister of Lott Copeland (see Vol. 1). She died in 1857, and Mr. Howell then married Mrs. Elender Johnson Elster, widow of John Elster and daughter of John J. Johnson (see Vol. 1). There were a total of twenty-one children born by the three marriages, seven by the first, thirteen by the second and one by the last. The children in their order, were as follows:

1. Mary M.b. 1817, m. _____ Lightsey.
2. John G.b. 1818, m. Mary C. Zeigler.
3. Sarahb. 1820, m. Richard Carter.
4. Elizabethb. 1822, m. Joel Walker, son of Berry.
5: Josephb. 1826, died in infancy.
6. Harrietb. 1828, died in infancy.
7. Richard Allenb. 1830, m. Nancy Wetherington, daughter of Dennis.
8. Jesse R.b. 1833, m. (1) Minerva Carter, daughter of George (2) Sarah E. Timmerman, daughter of Shimuel.
9. Joseph L.b. 1835, m. Remmie F. Stanfill, daughter of William.
10. James W.b. 1837, m. (1) Sarah Ann Roberts, daughter of John, Jr. (2) Mrs. Mittie Martm.
11. Harrietb. 1839, m. D. C. Fletcher, son of Zachariah.
12. Annb. 1841, m. (1) George Carter, son of William, died in C.S.A. (2) Henry T. Carter, son of George (3) Perryman Carter May 14, 1865.
13. Williamb. 1843, died single in C. S. Army, Co. "I", 12th Georgia Reg.
14. Charles F.b. 1850, m. Virginia A. Clayton.
15. Stephen R.b. 1852, died about 1862.
16. Isham D.b. 1854, m. (1) Martha Jones of Pasco, Co. Florida (2) Fannie
17. Aaron W.b. 1855, m. Virginia Osborn of Pasco Co., Florida
19. Barzilla Statenb. 1860, m. Sarah A. Walker, daughter of James of Jefferson Co., Florida

In addition to the foregoing, there were twin sons born in 1845, and another son was born in 1848, all of whom died in infancy, unnamed. In the list above, the first seven were by the first wife, the last one by the third wife and the others by the second wife.

Mr. Howell was for many years an active and faithful member of the Methodist Church with which he united in South Carolina. When he was about the age of forty, he was granted a local preacher's license and often exhorted in services. Due largely to his efforts, a Methodist Church was organized, the first of that faith in present Echols County, and the church house of which was located about two miles west of his home. The name of this church was Howell Methodist Church. The church was dissolved in the 1890s, and the church building was torn down about 1900.

Mr. Howell's only public service was that of Justice of Peace in the 904th district, Lowndes County, 1842-1849. He was cut out of Lowndes and placed in the new County of Echols in 1858. His death occurred in December 1860. He was buried in the family cemetery about 300 yards west of his home where his second wife had been buried, she being the first one to be buried there. This cemetery is now an abandoned burying ground and has no marked graves. The third wife survived and died about 1867.

The son, John G. Howell, took charge of his minor brothers, Charles F., Isham D., and Aaron W. Howell, and when he, John G., moved to Pasco County, Florida, in 1866, he took them with him and reared them to manhood there. Isham and Aaron married and lived in Florida, but Charles returnd to this section, married lived and died here. The other minor son, called Staten, was in the care of his mother until her death in 1867, after which his half-brother, James W. Howell, took him in charge and reared him to manhood.
