Jacob Carter
About 1720 - After 1790
The parents of Jacob Carter are truly unknown at this time. Jacob was not identified in Joseph Lyon Miller's book, "The Descendants of Capt. Thomas Carter of "Barford", Lancaster County, Virginia" however the Chinkypin by Dorothy Price states Thomas Jr is his father based on two other books and Mary Ketus Deen Holland states Moore Carter is his father and Thomas Carter Jr is his grandfather. The assumptions in the books "Chinkypin" and "Our Heritage: A Genealogy of the Descendants of Jacob Carter of South Carolina" are incorrect on the Ancestor(s) of Jacob.
We now know Jacob has been misidentified as the son of Moore Carter. A Moore Carter did have a son named Jacob Carter of about the same age as this Jacob Carter, but Moore's son, Jacob, died in North Carolina, and never lived in South Carolina. DNA evidence also proves that this Jacob Carter is not a descendant of the Carter family to which Moore Carter belongs. The mis-identification of Jacob as Moore's son goes back almost 100 years, but DNA proof now definitely proves Jacob of South Carolina is not the son of Moore (email from Dale M. Crawford September 15, 2014.)
Jacob Carter, the intended subject and father of Elijah, was born about 1720 in South Carolina. He was enumerated in the 1790 U.S. Census of residing in St Bartholomews Parish, Charleston District, SC. At that time only he and his wife along with one slave are listed within the home.
He married (1) SARAH possibly a CARTER about 1736 and bore the first 5 children. She was born 1714 in Colleton Co., SC, and died in Colleton Co., SC. He married (2) SARAH MIDDLETON Abt. 1760 in She was 15. Jacob fathered 4 children by Sarah Middleton, daughter of MARTIN MIDDLETON and UNKNOWN. She was born Bet. 1745 - 1748 in Colleton Co., SC, and died Jul 1811 in Colleton, SC.
Children of JACOB CARTER and SARAH CARTER are:
MARY ANN CARTER, b. Abt. 1734, Colleton Co., SC, b. St. Bartholowmew's Parish.; d. 1818, Wayne Co., GA.
JACOB CARTER, JR., b. Bet. 1736 - 1739, Carter's Ford, Colleton District, SC; m. ELIZABETH WARREN; b. Abt. 1794, Colleton District, SC.

MALPHUS, JOHN HALL.
1775-1845
CAMDEN
John Hall Malphus was born in Beaufort District, S.C., about 1775, a son of John and Sylvania Malphus. His wife was named Sarah but her maiden name is unknown. They had six known children:
1. Williamb. 1796, m. Sarah -, Moved to Alachua County, Florida.
2. Maryb. 1797, m. James Joyce Leigh.
3. Edwardb. 1804, m. Elizabeth _.
4. Marthab. 1808?, m. - Bennett.
5. Elizabethb. 1812?, m. (unknown).
6. John H. Jr.b. 1820, m. Elizabeth Wainwright, dau. of James, Feb. 11, 1841. Moved to Alachua Co., Fla.
The earliest known Georgia residence of John Hall Malphus was in Liberty County where they lived before 1800. He and his wife were among the early members of Jones Creek Baptist Church which was organized in 1810, Mrs. Malphus died a member about 1820-1. Soon thereafter he moved with his family across the Altamaha River into the new county of Appling and was living there in the time of 1821 land lottery at which time he drew land. He had moved to Duval County, Florida, by Jan, 18, 1825, at which time he made a bill of sale, as a gift, to his children named above to eighteen head of cattle and his household goods, reserving a life estate in himself (deed book "I"; p, 89, Camden County).
Jones Creek Church records show he was excluded as a member Dec. 26, 1818, but was restored Oct. 22, 1825. The occasion of his restoration followed his application for membership shortly before in Pidgeon Creek Baptist Church in present Nassau County. The latter church wrote Jones Creek Church recommending his restoration and asking for his letter, saying that "he was leading an orderly Christian life more so than we do". He thereupon became a member of Pidgeon Creek Church and died a member.
His last years were spent in Camden County where he died about 1845.

John Carter and Susannah
Husband John Carter
Born: 8 Jun 1725 111 Christened: Died: After 1793 - Orange County, VA Buried:
Father: Joseph Carter Mother: Catherine Stevens
Marriage:
Wife Susannah
Born: Christened: Died: Buried:
Children
General Notes: Husband - John Carter
John 4 Carter (Joseph, 3 Thomas, 2 Thomas 1 ), born June 8, 1725, died after 1793 in Orange county. January 4,
1771, John Carter had a deed from his mother, Catharine Carter, for her dower in 215 acres of land where his father,
Joseph Carter, dec'd, had lived. April 24, 1780, Joseph Rogers, of Culpeper, sold to John Carter, Gent., of Spotsylvania, 188 acres and improvements in Orange county, to which he removed his family, as in the census of 1782, John Carter, of Orange, was the head of a family of sixteen whites and thirty servants. February 25, 1785, Robert Thomas sold to John Carter, of Orange, 455 acres, buildings and other improvements for £230. March 25, 1785, John Carter and wife Susannah, of Orange, sold to William Coats, of Spotsylvania, 165 acres in Spotsylvania, a part of a tract purchased by the said John Carter's father, Joseph Carter, from Robert Goodloe and April
1st they sold an adjoining 60 acres to Meredith Anderson. Both these deeds are witnessed by Beverly and William Winslow, who are said to have been cousins of the Carters. April 3, 1787, John Carter, of Orange, released to his son-in-law, David Lively, of Spotsylvania, his title to a negro servant. June 20, same year, John and Susannah sold 13 acres of their plantation to Joseph Bell. This is the last appearance of Susannah Carter's signature to her husband's deeds. February 21, 1791, he purchased 41 acres adjoining his land from Richard Moore Thomas, of Woodford county, Ky., but then in Orange county, witnessed by Joseph and Priscilla Carter and January 28, 1793, he sold the place where he then lived \emdash 276 acres at a pound per acre to Roger and Henry Bell. Also on same date 104 acres to Adam Quisenberry; and April 22, 1793, appears for the last time in the records when he purchased a 200 acre plantation from Joseph May and wife Jane. John and Susannah Carter evidently had a large family as shown by the census, unless they had grandchildren living with them, but I have the names of but three of their children :
216. John, Jr., born September 21, 1757, died in Spotsylvania, June 20, 1808.
217. Joseph, living in Orange in 1815, and 1817, when he and wife, Polly, made deeds for land had from his father,
John Carter.
218. Priscilla, unmarried in 1791.
219. , a daughter who married David Lively, of Spotsylvania.
John Carter, Sr., and John Carter, Jr., both served as privates in the Virginia troops in the Revolution.
