In his youth, John Floyd was an intense patriot though a mere lad. He displayed patriotic slogans and emblems on his hat and finally ran away from home and joined the patriots, at the age of 14. The elder Floyd was a prominent officer in the Revolutionary struggle.

In 1800, Charles Floyd and wife and their son John with his family, moved to Camden County, and granted large tracts of land where in due time they had large plantations and built fine colonial type homes. The elder Floyd's home was called "Bellevue" and the son's was known as "Fairfield", both situated on or near Crooked River. The Floyd homes were large, well-built edifices that stood until recent years.

Gen. Floyd had a long and distinguished military career. He was commissioned Captain of the 31st militia, Camden County, May 2, 1804. Two years later, he was commissioned Brigadier-General, lst Brigade, 1st Division, Georgia Militia, June 26, 1806. He was holding this rank when the War of 1812 came on. He commanded a force of 600 men at Point Peter five miles from St. Marys, but was later transferred to Camp Hope near Fort Hawkins (now Macon) and he commanded troops in the construction of a line of forts and bIockhouses. from the Oemulgee River to the Alabama River. He then commanded a large force of militia and friendly Indians in an expedition across the Chattahoochee into Indian territory, the purpose being to subdue the hostile Indians then under British influence. The well-known battles of Autossee and Challibee were fought by his command, and he was wounded in one of them. For his fine work in suppressing the Indians he was voted the thanks of the legislature and promoted to Major-General of the lst Division, and was commissioned Nov. 24, 1815. He held this rank until his death, June 24, 1824.

Gen. Floyd was Representative from Camden County 1803-1804 and again in 1822. He was State Senator 1805-06, and 1830. He served as a Congressman from Georgia in 1826. He served as a Justice of the Inferior Court of his county for several years. He suffered imprisonment in the latter part of the Revolution, and the estate property was all lost through devestations; but in the years that followed after moving to Georgia, he accumulated a large estate. He was skillful In the-use of tools and for sometime built sail-boats for sale. He used in his boat-building a number of skilled slaves supervised by competent overseers. He was also a skilled surveyor and helped to run the Georgia-Florida line.

General Notes: Husband - Joshua Lee

Joshua Lee was born during 1782 in South Carolina, a son of Moses Lee. He grew up in the Marion District, where he married Martha Ford, born in 1780 in South Carolina, daughter of James Ford.

1. Elizabethb. 1801, m. James M. Patten (Vol. 1).
2. Jemimab. 1807, m. John Mathis, son of Edmund.
3. Nancy b. 1809, m., Tyre Mathis, son of Edmund.
4. Celia b. 1812, m, William Seaborn Peters.
5. Zachariahb. 1816, m. Phoebe Register, daughter of Samuel.
6. Sarah b. 1820, m. Rev. Isaac D. Hutto. No issue.

Joshua Lee and family moved to Georgia in 1808, or 1809, and their first residence here was in Pulaski County, where he appears as a petit juror, June Term, 1809, Pulaski Superior Court. He owned and lived on lot 23, 22nd district of Pulaski County (about 8 miles east of Cochran on Highway 26). The new settlers in the area formed Mt. Horeb Church in which Joshua and brother Jesse were members. In 1811, Joshua and Jesse, along with others formed the Trail Branch Baptist Church so they could worship closer to their homes.

In the War of 1812, he served in 1813 in a militia detachment stationed at Forts Green and Lawrence on the Ocmulgee River. Joshua also served in the Indian War in Florida

When Appling County was opened to settlers, Mr. Lee was among the first to move there (1819). In 1825, he moved on further southward and located in Lowndes County, where he settled on the west side of the Alapaha River and acquired land. Records show he bought Lot 521, 10th District, Nov. 21st, 1827, from James Blair of Habersham County; Lot 520, Jan. 7, 1830, from Frederick Yeomans of Montgomery County, and several other adjoining lots later. He soon began construction of a large millpond and installed gin and gristmills operated by waterpower. This made his home and plantation a sort of gathering place for settlers to get their corn ground and cotton ginned, and this soon gave rise to the village called "Alapaha" but the name of which was changed in the 1850s to "Milltown" and in 1920 to "Lakeland", now the county seat of the County of Lanier. This property was cut into Berrien out of Lowndes in 1856, and into Lanier County in 1920.

Mr. Lee sold out his possessions to William Lastinger, April 22, 1848, having traded with Mr. Lastinger for his valuable holdings in what was Ware but now Clinch County, consisting of several lots of lands with farms on each lot. His home-place was Lot 488, 7th district, which was the old Lastinger home-place, where he had settled about 1841 or 1842. He was living there during the 1850 Census for Ware County, GA. His land was valued at $2000. There Joshua lived until his death in 1855. He was buried in a cemetery at what is now known as Prospect Church (which church was not organized until 1859) in Clinch County, Georgia.

Mrs. Lee, the widow, made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Hutto, until her death in 1865. Mr. And Mrs. Lee were charter members of Union Primitive Baptist Church, Oct. 1st, 1825, and were members there until they died. He was ordained a deacon in that church, April 13, 1833, and remained active in that capacity until his death.

Martha is also buried in Prospect Cemetery in Clinch County, GA.
