Daddy was known by the name Elbert or Mr. Elbert. He was born December 20th 1901, the son of Hardy H. Crews and Martha Mizell Thomas. He attended school at Sardis School in Folkston Georgia.

Elbert was well known in the Charlton County Community. He took up alot of time with the children and the elderly. He always enjoyed being around people. He was a quiet man and a good listener and people respected him for that.

In his later years he worked for the Charlton County Road Department as a road grader operator. When the children heard the road grader coming they would run to see him.

He was also a deacon at Philadelphia Freewill Baptist Church, where he was a long time member. He loved to listen to gospel music, and especially enjoyed Homecoming Sunday at Philadelphia. The family faithfully attended services.

Elbert married Mabel Crews, Nov. 24, 1926. Mabel was born on January 32,1908, the daughter of Charlie B. and Julia Altman Crews. Mabel loved to grow vegetables and flowers. She cared alot about people. She worked hard to keep things going.

The couple had four children. Agnes Duke married Harry Harvey (divorced) and Sonny Duke. W.C. Crews and married Lottie Hodges. Elmer married Jeanette Trouille (divorced) and Phyllis, and Kenneth married Edie Jurczyk.

Elbert and Mabel were married almost 40 years before he died, Feb.11th 1966 of lung cancer. Mabel was also married to the late Banner Crews for 15 years and to the late J. E. Turner for about 7 years.

Mabel died January 26th, 2000.
