DAY, WILLIAMWilliam Day was born in New York in 1800. About 1825 .he decided to come south, and coming by boat he landed at Darien, McIntosh Co. Ga., where he found work and lived about five years. He was there in 1827 when he drew land in the 1827 state land lottery. From there he went to Hamilton County, Fla., about the same time that William Bassett, Josiah Baisden and others moved from McIntosh to Hamilton County. He was married twice. His first marriage was in Hamilton County, April 28, 1833, to Nessie Hall, daughter of Thomas Hall. She was born 1812 in Laurens County, Ga., and died in Hamilton County, 1851. By her five children were born:
1800-1860
HAMILTON CO. FLA.
1. James H.b. 1834, died single in C.S. Army.
2. Josephb. 1836, died single in C.S. Army.
3. Thomasb. 1840, died single in C.S. Army.
4. Williamb. 1845, m. Sarah Dorman.
5. Nancyb. 1847, m. William Sauls.
The second marriage was on Sept. 24, 1852, in Hamilton County, to Nancy, daughter of Edmund Mathis (Vol.1). She was born in 1812 in Bulloch County, Ga., and died in February, 1897, at the home of her son, Stephen Day, in DuPont, Clinch Co. Ga. She was buried at Prospect Church near DuPont. By her three children were born:
6. Carolineb. 1853, m. Ist. Rowan B. Johnson; 2nd. Guilford A. Register.
7. Stephenb. 1855, m. Isabella Benton, dau of Rev. E. J.
8. Rebeccab. 1856, m. Thomas J. Bryan.
Mr. Day served as a County Commissioner of Hamilton County, 1851-53 and again 1855-59. He also served as Clerk of the Circuit Court, 1857 until his death in 1860. After his death his widow and her children moved to Clinch County, and made their home with her brother, Tyre Mathis (Vol.II), for some years; and after the children were grown she lived a while with Mrs. Bryan in Hamilton Co. Fla., and later with her son, Stephen, at DuPont in Clinch County.
Mrs. Day was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church, uniting with Union Church Oct. 11, 1840, at its "arm" on Cow Creek, in what was then Lowndes County. She and her parents transferred their memberships and became organizing members of Wayfare Church on Cow Creek in April of 1841. On July 19, 1856, as Mrs. Day, she was dismissed by letter, and transferred her membership to Bethel Church, Hamilton County. After moving back to her old home-section she transferred to Prospect Church near DuPont, April 12, 1862. She then transferred to Hebron Church, Hamilton County, July 10, 1869, but on May 7, 1870 was dismissed by letter from Hebron and received back by letter Aug. 13, 1870, into Prospect Church, of which she remained a member until her death.
Stephen S. Smith was appointed administrator of the William Day estate, Nov. 10, 1860.
