They lived in Columbia County seven or eight years, then moved to Putnam County, Fla., where they lived until 1864. On Feb. 1, 1851 in Columbia Co. Fla., where he was residing, he made application for bounty-land under the Act of 1850 for his service in Capt. Walker's company. On April 16, 1855, in Putnam County, Fla., where he was residing at the time, he made another application for bounty-land for the same service, under the Act of 1855 allowing additional bounty-land. The latter application was held up for some reason and he submitted a substitute appplication made Jan. 11, 1856, in Putman county, based on his service in Capt. Jones' company. This last application was approved and he was granted 80 acres.

ALLEN, JAMES.James Allen, the first Sheriff of Irwin County, was born in North Carolina about 1790. He was a brother of Isaac Allen (Vol.Il), Henry Allen, William Allen, John Allen, Dennis Allen, David Allen and. Benj. F. Allen, all of whom were early settlers in South Georgia, William and Henry later returning to North Carolina; William became the father of William Allen, born 1803, who became Governor of Ohio and U.S. Senator from that state. James Allen, the subject, married but the name of his wife has not been learned. They had three children, all girls, viz:
1790-1893

1. Elizab. 1811, m. David Gornto, Nov. 20, 1827, in Irwin Co.
2. Falribyb. 1815, m. Wm. R. Hays, May 24, 1839, in Madison Co. Fla.
3. Anneb. 1819, m. Edw. C. Howland, Sept. 22. 1843, in Madison Co. Fla.
James Allen moved with his parents to Georgia around 1805 and located in Telfair County near Jacksonville. In 1819, he became one of the first settlers of the new County of Irwin, and the next year in the first election for county officers was elected Sheriff. He served 1820-1822. In 1824 he was re-elected Sheriff after skipping a term, and served 1824-26. At the time, he lived in the southern portion of Irwin County in the portion cut into Lowndes County, 1826. After living a few years near the present town of Hahira, he moved to another section of what was then Lowndes County (now Brooks) and settled about five miles south of where Quitman now is, on the south side of Piscola Creek. But with the advent of more settlers and loving the frontier life, he moved on to Madison County in Florida, where he located on the Suwannee River and lived there until his death at the age of 103 years.
