Richard Allen Howell, a son of Jesse Howell (Vol. II), was born in Barnwell District, S. C., Nov. 4, 1830. He was reared by his aunt, Mrs. Elizabeth Allen and her husband, Norman Allen, until their removal to Lowndes County, Georgia, in 1834, when he was returned to his father. Then, in 1839, when his father moved to Lowndes County, Ga., he was brought here and lived until old age. He was married in 1851 to Nancy, daughter of Dennis Wetherington (Vol. I). She was born April 20, 1833 in Lowndes County, and died at her home in the same county, Feb. 23, 1897. To Mr. and Mrs. Howell were born ten children, viz:

1. Jesse Davidb. Sept. 8, 1852, m. Elizabeth Carter, dau. of Jesse D.

After marriage, Mr. Howell settled on a farm six miles northwest of where Statenville now is, in what was then Lowndes but now Echols County. He lived there until December, 1867, when he sold out and moved to a farm two miles south of Naylor in Lowndes County; in December, 1881, he sold out and bought a farm about eight miles northeast of Valdosta on the old Milltown road, and moved there. His wife died there, and was buried at Antioch Church.

In November, 1903, Mr. Howell went to Suwannee County, Fla., and made his home with his son, Wm. B., and lived there until his death, March 1, 1907. He was buried at Leona Methodist Church in Suwannee County, of which church he was a member, having been a member of the Methodist connection from boyhood.

Mr. Howell volunteered March, 1862, in Co. "H", 26th Volunteer Georgia Infantry Regiment, and was sent to Virginia where he was wounded in his leg in his first engagement. As his wound healed slowly he was finally placed on guard duty August, 1863, at Libby Prison in Richmond, Va., where he served thirteen months. He was then granted a 90-day furlough to visit home, still being partly disabled. At the expiration of his furlough, he was prevented from rejoining his command by Sherman's march through Georgia and into the Carolinas.

Mr. Howell was a member for some years of the Masonic fraternity, receiving his degrees about 1865 in Alapaha Lodge, No. 209, at Statenville.

Census Refs: 1850, Lowndes; 1860, Echols; 1870, Lowndes.
