Gene Barber Some Notes On The Johns Family

" A widespread and prolific family in south Georgia and northeast Florida, most of the Johns family seem to be descendents of a Jeremiah 'Jerry' Johns who was born before the Revolutionary War in North Carolina. Jeremiah and his wife Levicy (an old form of 'Louisa') lived in South Carolina and Georgia into the first quarter of the 19th century. The names of his children will be readily recognizable as popular names for many of the present Johns generation... Sarah, born about 1809 in South Carolina married Joseph, son of Samuel Crews, and was responsible for many of that clan throughout southeast Georgia and northeast Florida.

From the Prospect Church (Hamilton County, Florida) Meeting Minutes:

1/25/1840 - J Johns selected in case of failure as a messenger to bear letters to the association.
7/15/1846 - J Johns is listed as Clerk Protem also 8/22/46, 10/24/46, 11/21/46, 1/23/47.
5/23/1858 - J Johns is Church Clerk, also 11/27/58, 1/22/59, 5/21/59 thru 4/3/69.
2/24/1852 - Brother Jeremiah Johns came forward with an acknowledgement of intoxication and was forgiven.

He was born in SC November 18, 1788. He died in Marian Station, Hamilton
County, Florida on July 22, 1869..at the age of 80. His body was interred in
the Prospect Church Cemetery at Belmont, Hamilton County, FL. This info came
from his tombstone, census records, and various other sources. Jeremiah is
listed in the registrer of Deceased Veterans of Florida, Vol., #25, page 14.
This volumne was the work of the Florida Works Projects Administration in
1940-1941.
He first married Louvicey (Lucy) circa 1809 in GA. She died circa 1841 in
Marion Station. In the minutes of the Prospect Church for 16 Jan., 1840.."New
members accepted by experience David Sistrunk and by letter, Jeremiah and Lucy
Johns...Philemon Bryan, Clerk"
He then married Rachael Johnson before 1850 in Marion Station. This was
her second marriage. She was born in 1816 in NC. According to the 1860 census
Rachael could neither read nor write. She was received into the Prospect
Church by experience Saturday November 23, 1850. She was dismissed by letter
in 1890 because she was joining a son, Cornelious, in Orange County.
Jeremiah served in the military in the First Regiment, Warrens Militia
and in Robert Youngbloods detachment in the Seminole Indian Wars in 1837 and
1838. He enrolled in Hamilton County on Jan., 10, 1837 and served four months
and 10 days; he then enrolled at FT. Pierce June 16, 1837 and served until
Dec., 6, 1837. He also enrolled at FT Pierce on April 6, 1838 and served until
July 22, 1838 when he was discharged.
In the 1850 Hamilton County census he is listed as the head of the family
with his wife Rachael and Matthew, 22, Martha, 13 and Jeremiah, 10. Also
present were Rachael's two sons by her previous marriage, Lewis, 11, and
George H., 7. In the 1840 Census Jeremiah is listed as owning 5 slaves. In the
1830 Census he was listed as the head of a family.
Heritage Books, "Records of Tallassee and Newmansville General Land
Office" (1825-1892) page 148 dated March 9, 1837 lists Jeremiah's land as one
mile south of Genoa, FL.
"Bits and Pieces":
He voted in the election of 1833 to elect a delegate to Congress. He was voter
# 1 at Upper Mineral Springs, Precinct #4, Hamilton County, in the first
statewide election in May 26, 1845. His son, John C. was voter #2 at the
Frances Ross home in that same election.

On January 26, 1839 a petition to Congress was presented by a group of Florida
Citizens, Jeremiah included, requesting a grant of a township of land to aid
in the founding of Dade Institute. This notice appeared in the Territorial
Papers of the United States , The Territory of Florida, 1834-1839, (National
Archives).
He was the Justice of the Peace in Hamilton County as of September 9, 1851.
Jeremiah deeded his land to his wife, Rachael, in 1866. It was recordered
Feb., 13, 1866. The Deed is listed in Deed Book, "F", page 589, Hamilton
County, FLorida. He lived on Camp Branch until his death.
His first wife is something of a mystery; Lillian Adams a great grandaughter
of Jeremiah, born Nov., 8, 1882 and died Nov., 26, 1971, provided information
about 45 different members of the Johns Family in 1965. She said that his
first wife was Louvicy Walker??? The other info that could be checked proved
accurate--it was, however, of more recent vintage???)

We now know that Jeremiah and Levicy were married in 1762. To wit:
