William Mathis was born in Bulloch County, May 17, 1825, a son of David Mathis (Vol. II). When about six months old he was brought by his parents to Lowndes County and grew up in that county. He was married there Dec. 31, 1846, to Martha E. Strickland, oldest child and daughter of Simpson Strickland. She was born in Lowndes (now Brooks) County, Dec. 22, 1829.

William and Martha Mathis had eleven children, viz:

5. David b. Max. 31, 1857, in. Jincy Lindsey, dau. Of Matthew R., Dec. 22, 1878.
6. Nancy Elizabeth b. May 4, 1859, m. John Isom King.
7. Estherb. May 15, 1861, died single Sept. 25, 1910.
8. Ezekiel W.b. Apr. 25, 1863, m. Mourning Webb, Jan. 11, 1885.

William Mathis and his oldest son, Simpson, both served in the Georgia militia the last year of the Civil War. Simpson died of measles while in the service, age nearly 17 years. The Mathis home and plantation was cut out of Lowndes into Berrien County in its formation in 1856, and since 1918 has been in Cook County.

Mr. Mathis died Aug. 21, 1886, and his wife died March 5, 1890. They were buried in the Mathis cemetery near Cecil, Ga.
