MATHIS, TYRE
1810-1891
CLINCH

Tyre Mathis, a son of Edmund and Unity Mathis (Vol. 1), was born in Bulloch County in 1806. He was married in Appling County in 1826 to Nancy, daughter of Joshua Lee (q. v.). She was born in South Carolina in 1809 and was brought to Georgia the same year by her parents. To Mr. and Mrs. Mathis were born five children:

1. Celiab. 1832, m. Greenberry Holt.
2. Marthab. 1833, m. James T. Touchton.
3. Edmundb. 1836, never m. Died a prisoner in Civil War.
4. Joshuab. 1840, never m. Died at home, 1864, while on furlough.
5. Johnb. 1842, never m. Died at home, 1864, while on furlough.

Tyre Mathis and wife moved from Appling County to Lowndes County in 1828 and made their home near her parents. When Joshua Lee moved to Ware (now Clinch) County, they moved also and lived on one of the Lee farms. On March 6, 1856, he bought Lot 525, 7th district, at administrators' sale from the Sherman G. Lewis estate, and he moved and lived there until his death, January 8, 1891, age 85 years. His wife died the year before. They were buried at Prospect Primitive Baptist Church near their home.

Mr. Mathis was ensign of 664th district, Lowndes County, 1834-1838 and was in the Indian War of 1838, serving under Capt. Levi J. Knight. He was captain of the militia in the 970th district, Ware now Clinch County, 1848-1850. In January 1849, he was elected one of the Justices of Ware Inferior Court for a four-year term, but was cut off into the new County of Clinch the next year, which terminated his service. He held this office in Clinch County, 1853-1854.

Mr. and Mrs. Mathis were members of Fellowship Church on the Little Satilla River in Appling County, but moved their membership from that church to Union Church on the Alapaha River, April 12, 1828. They were dismissed by letter from Union, December 11, 1847, and were received in January 1848, into Wayfare Church. He was elected deacon August 1850 and ordained, but was expelled for "protracted intoxication" August 5, 1854. He was restored September 1, 1855. He and his wife were dismissed by letter from Wayfare December 3rd, 1858, and entered into the constituting of Prospect Church near their home, January 22, 1859. They continued faithful members of Prospect until their deaths. Mr. Mathis became a very godly man and served well in the office of deacon.

The loss of their three sons in the Civil War was a great loss to Mr. and Mrs. Mathis. As indicated above, one of them died in a Federal prison and the other died at home while on sick furlough. The two sons, Joshua and John, were buried at Prospect Church.
