Notes
General:
MATHIS, JAMES.
1786- 1859
COOK

James Mathis was born in Sampson County, N.C., in 1786. He was a brother of Edmund Mathis (Vol.1) and John Mathis; they were sons of Edmund Mathis, Jr., and grandsons of Edmund Mathis, Sr., R. S., of Duplin (now Sampson) County, N. C. After the death of their father in Sampson County about 1795, the three brothers named came to Bulloch County, Ga., about 1801, James at that time not being grown. James was married in Bulloch County, July 7, 1810, to Rhoda Monk, born 1792 in Burke County, daughter of William Monk, R.S., (Vol.1). They had seven known children, viz:

5. John b. 1829, m. (unknown).
6. Mahlonb. 1831, died In C. S. Army, 1862.
7. James, Jr.b. 1834, m. Mary Ann

Mr. Mathis lived in Bulloch County until 1824 when he moved to Appling County. The next year he was elected a Justice of Appling Inferior Court and served from January, 1825, until 1827 when he resigned and moved to Lowndes County where he was living in the 1830 census in the 660th militia district. His home-place was included in the 790th district when that district was laid out a few years later, and he served as 2nd Lieutenant of the militia there 1838-1842. His home-place was where the village of Cecil now is in present Cook County, and was cut out of Lowndes into Berrien County in 1856.

Mr and Mrs. Mathis were members of the Primitive Baptist Church. He was baptized into Union Church, Sept. 11, 1830, and she on Aug. 13, 1831. They were dismissed by letter Jan. 12, 1839, and received by letter Jan. 19th following, into Pleasant Church. They died members of Pleasant. He was licensed by his church to preach, Dec. 16, 1843, but was never ordained to the ministry. As a licensed preacher he "exercised his gifts" in his home-church and in nearby churches for several years.

Mr. Mathis died June 17, 1859, at his home in northern Lowndes County, having moved there and settled in the Cat Creek community a few years before his death. His home-place at his death was on lots No. I in the 11th district and No. 1 in the 12th district of Lowndes, which two lots adjoin each other. His estate was administered by his son-in-law, B. J. Roberts. Mrs. Mathis, the widow, died in 1863. The son, Mahlon Mathis, enlisted May 9, 1862, in Co. "I", 50th Georgia Regiment, C.S.A., and served until his death of disease, Dec. 10, 1862. He died in a Confederate hospital in Richmond, Va.
