General:
MATHIS, JohnJOHN MATHIS became the father of one of the largest families of children in Wiregrass Georgia, having twenty-three children by his two wives (who were sisters), all of these living to be grown and married. He was a brother to Edmund Mathis (q.v.) and to James Mathis. These three brothers were all born in North Carolina, their parents living in Duplin County and being cut into Sampson County when that county was formed out of Duplin about 1785. Record is found where John Mathis granted 190 acres in Duplin County, January 22, 1800.
1774-1852
BERRIEN
Sometime about 1802 John Mathis and his family, with his brother Edmund and family and John Register and his family and others in the large family connection, moved from Sampson County to Bulloch County, Georgia. Record is found there of his service on the jury at various times from 1806 to 1824. He was appointed July, 1812, as a constable by the Inferior Court of Bulloch County, in Capt. Frederick Williams' district. He was elected Sheriff of Bulloch County in 1816, and served until 1822. On July 4, 1825, the Inferior Court appointed him Sheriff to fill a vacancy, and he served until February 1826. Two years later Mr. Mathis with an already large family moved to the new county of Lowndes and settled a place later known as the old Owen Smith place on the old Berrien-Lowndes County line. His residence was cut into Berrien County in its formation in 1856.
Mr. Mathis was twice married, both times to daughters of Isaac Edmondson, (q.v.), a Revolutionary soldier, who had moved from North Carolina through South Carolina to Bulloch County. The first wife was Nancy Edmondson, born 1785, and after her death in 1820 he soon after (October 25, 1820) married her sister, Susannah, born 1799. The children born by both wives were as follows:
1. Davidb. 1802, m. Sarah Monk, daughter of William

In Lowndes County Mr. Mathis was elected a Justice of the Inferior Court in January, 1829, and served three years, then resigning. He was baptized into the membership of Union Baptist Church, September 10, 1830, and was dismissed by letter August 10, 1839, and united with Pleasant Church which had been organized the year before and was much nearer his home. He died a member of this church.
Mr. Mathis died in 1852, and his oldest son, David, applied for administration November 2, 1852, and was appointed. He and his last wife were buried at the old Owen Smith graveyard on the old Mathis homestead. Graves unmarked.

John Mathis, who for a time signed his name as John Mathis, Jr., was a son of Edmund and Unity Mathis and was born in Bulloch County in 1802 (I find this birthdate suspect). He moved to this section with his parents, and was married in 1827 to Jemima, born 1807 in Georgia, daughter of Joshua Lee. To them were born nine children, viz:
1. Joshuab. 1828, m. Rachel Touchton, dau. of William and Sarah.
2. Nancyb.1830, m. E. M. (Miles) Harnage.
3. Unityb. 1832, m. John L. Courson.

9. Martha R.b. 1847, never married.
Mr. and Mrs. Mathis, after marriage lived in that portion of Lowndes now Lanier, until 1849 when they moved into what was then Ware County, and were cut into the new county of Clinch the next year, 1850. His home place was on lot 441, 7th district, where he lived until 1871 when he sold out and lived with his son Ezekiel south of Dupont until shortly before his death when he went to Hamilton County, Fla., to live with his son John, Jr. He died there and was buried at Prospect Church in that county.
Mr. Mathis was baptized Oct. 11,1840 into Union Primitive Baptist Church; was dismissed by letter April 10, 1841, and then became a charter member of Wayfare Church; was dismissed by letter Feb. 3, 1855, by Wayfare, and transferred his membership to Bethany Church, where it remained until he went into the organization of Prospect Church nearer his home, Jan. 22, 1859. He was a member of Prospect until his death. No record appears of his wife's membership.
Mr. Mathis was ensign of the militia in the 442nd district of Appling County, 1822-25; Justice of the Peace, 664th district, Lowndes County, 1833-38 and Coroner of Clinch County, 1851-58 and again 1861-64. He served two enlistments in the Indian War in 1838, one under Capt. Jesse Carter and the other under Levi J. Knight."

John Mathis, who for a time signed his name as John Mathis, Jr., was a son of Edmund and Unity Mathis and was born in Bulloch County in 1802. Mr Mathis is interred in Prospect Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Hamilton County. The date of Jemima's death as well as her final resting place is unknown at this time. Both were enumerated in the home of son Ezekial in district 1224 in Clinch County, GA but no records after this 1870 US Census can be located,

Notes
General:
Joshua Mathis was born in 28 October 1828 in Lowndes County, Georgia (1). He is the son of John Mathis and Jemima Lee. Joshua married Rachel Hazel Touchton, a daughter of William Touchton and Sarah Delk during 1855. Joshua and Rachel had six children:
Sarah A. b. March 3, 1848 d. February 15 1935 m. Hillery Melton December 29, 1875.
Mary A. b. 1850
Wealthy b. 1852
Rachel b. 1857
John b. 1860
Unity b. 1864
Joshua and Rachel were enumerated in Ware County, GA in 1850, ages 22 and 21. Rachel's sister Mary was also in the household during this time.
The family home during the 1900 census was Pine Grove, in Suwannee County, Florida. At this time, Joshua is age 73. His father's birthplace is South Carolina as well as his mother's. It is here that the marriage date of 1855 is listed. I think the 45 years married is suspect. That would put the marriage date at 1855. Joshua and Rachel had three children before that date. Joshua, as with many of our family members was listed as a farmer. The date of his demise is unknown as of this writing.
