Notes
General:
MIZELL, OWEN KING.
1811-1893
CHARLTON

Owen King Mizell, a son of Jesse Mizell (Vol. I), was born Oct. 20, 1811, in Emanuel County, and died at his home in Charlton County, May 30, 1893. He was married twice. His first wife was Miss Nancy White; she died soon after the birth of her first child, Margaret; and Mr. Mizell then married Nancy, daughter of James Griffin (Vol. I). She was born April 3, 1819, in Georgia, and died Aug. 11, 1885. By her all of the following children were born except Mar-
garet, viz:

1. Mary Margaretb. 1841, m. Edward T. Griffin.
2. Sarah C.b. 1845, m. James A. Lowther.
3. Polly Annb. 1846, m. James M. McDuffie from Tenn.
4. Nancyb. 1850, m. Alfred J. Cason.
5. Griffin Kingb. 1854, m. Secession Gowen.
6. Ellenb. 1857, m. Tom Russell from Va.
7. Juliab. 1860, m. Walter B. Baker.

Mr. Mizell, after his first marriage, first settled on Spanish Creek at a point where the old King's Road crossed it in what was then Camden County but which part of Camden was cut into the new County of Charlton in 1854. He lived there until his death, though his death occurred at the home of his son-in-law, Mr. Cason. He had a large plantation which was worked by slave labor. On his plantation was a fully equipped blacksmith shop and cotton mill and grist mill and other improvements. He prospered and was rated as very wealthy in his day.
Owen K. Mizell served in the Indian War, in Capt. E. D. Tracy's company of Camden County militia, in several different enlistments from 1837 to 1840. In 1838, he was 1st Sergeant in the company, and at times served as a private. He served as 1st Lieutenant in the Centerville Riflemen, 1836-38.
Mr. Mizell's first public office was Justice of Peace in the 32nd district, Camden County, 1837-1841. On the creation of Charlton County, he was elected one of its first Inferior Court justices, serving 1854-1857. He then served three terms in the legislature as Representative, viz., in 1857-58, 1861-1863 and in 1865-1867.
Owen K. Mizell was an ordained minister in the Primitive Baptist Church. He was originally a member of High Bluff Church where he was baptized July 8, 1843, Later, he transferred by letter to Sardis Church, much nearer to his home, and was ordained there to the ministry in the 1850s. The record of his ordination was burned when the records of Sardis Church were burned in the, home of the late Elder W. 0. Gibson some years ago; so therefore, it cannot be learned just how long he was in the ministry, He was pastor at Sardis Church for many years,
Elder Mizell and his second wife were buried at Sardis Church.

Census Refs: 1850, Camden; 1860, 1870, Charlton.
