George Carter was born in Tattnall County, April 29, 1817, son of David Carter and wife Rachel Cooper and grandson of George Carter (Vol. III). He moved with his parents to Liberty County in early life, and was married there Dec. 19, 1836, to Keziah Grooms, a daughter of Benjamin Grooms and his wife Jane Townsend Grooms. She was born in South Carolina, April 13, 1818. Seventeen children were born to this marriage:

Mr. Carter with his family moved from Georgia to Florida in 1842, and first settled in present Clay County, and after a few years then moved to San Mateo, Fla. Then he moved to present Hastings, Fla., where he built the first house in the new town. After the civil war he moved to St. Johns County, Fla., and lived in the section that became known as Cartersville until his death March 8, 1888. His widow died there March 24, 1902. They were buried in the Pellicer Creek Cemetery in St. Johns County.

CARTER, George.HON. GEORGE CARTER, a son of Capt. Jesse Carter, served four terms as Representative from Lowndes County, 1841, 1842, 1843, and 1849-1850. He introduced the bill to create Clinch County out of Lowndes and Ware during his last term. He was born in 1806 in Colleton district, South Carolina, son of Jesse and Molsy, and came with his parents to Appling County, Georgia, in 1819. In 1825, he moved to Lowndes County where he afterwards lived and died. He married Mary (Pollie), born 1814, daughter of Henry Parrish and Nancy (Williams) Parrish. To them were born:

Mr. Carter served in his father's militia company in the Indian War in 1838 as a private. He was commissioned 1st lieutenant in the Lowndes County militia, 518th district, May 2, 1827, and on April 8, 1839 was commissioned 1st lieutenant in the militia of the 661st district of Lowndes County.
Mr. Carter's wife's parents lived in that portion of Lowndes now Berrien or Cook County. For a few years after marriage, he and his wife lived in the 518 district, G. M. (territory now Berrien), but later he bought a farm in the present Naylor district of Lowndes County, and lived there until he died in 1860. His widow applied August 7, 1861, for the guardianship of the minor children, Jasper J., Newton A., Henry T., Rufus H., Georgia Ann, Mary Ann and Caroline M., and was appointed.

CARTER, GEORGE C.George C. Carter, son of John Carter (Vol. III), was born in South Carolina, Sept. 1st, 1830. He died at his home in Echols county, Jan. 6, 1889. He was married in 1851 to Lydia E., daughter of John Terrell (Vol.1). She was born in this state, Jan. 5, 1828, and died Jan. 22, 1911. Born to them were five children:

Mr. Carter was brought in his infancy by his parents to Lowndes County, and grew up there. In 1858, in the creation of Echols out of Lowndes, he was placed in the new county, and lived there until his death. He served as Tax-Collector of Echols County, 1868-1871, and as County Treasurer, 1871-1873.
George C. Carter was a faithful member of Sardis Baptist Church for a number of years prior to his death. He was also a member of the Masonic order, receiving his degrees in 1865 in Alapaha Lodge, No. 209, at Statenville. He served as tiler of his lodge, 1869 to 1872, inclusive, and also held other lodge offices later, and died a member.
He and his wife were buried in the Carter Cemetery in Echols county.
