STATEN, Barzilla
1791-1846
Lanier
Barzilla Staten, one of the first settlers of Appling County, was born in Georgia about 1791, a son of John and Penelope Staten and only grandson of Solomon and Elender Staten. The family moved to Georgia and first settled in Effingham County where Solomon granted 365 acres of land in 1792. They later moved to Tattnall County where the subject's father and grandparents died. Solomon Staten died in 1815, leaving a will dated November 2, 1807, probated March 6, 1.815, bequeathing his estate to his wife, Elender, and his grandson, Barzilla Staten. Mrs. Elender Staten died in 1817, leaving a will dated March 6, 1815, probated May 15, 1817, bequeathing her estate to her grandson, Barzilla Staten, and "to the heirs of my son, John Staten, deceased." A deed of record in Tattnall County, dated 1819, conveys the home place lands of John Staten, deceased, consisting of 975 acres "in the fork of Collins Creek where John Staten lived." This deed was signed by Mrs. Penelope (Penny) Staten, the widow, Mrs. Penelope Branch (daughter) and Barzilla Staten (son), and was made to John Johnson (who later signed his name as John J. Johnson) and who married Elizabeth Staten, one of the heirs also. The widow and her son, Barzilla, then moved across the Altamaha River into the new County of Appling. They appear in the 1820 Census of Appling as "Zilar Staten" and "Penny Staten", heads of families.
Barzilla Staten, the subject, was married about 1817 to Miss Catherine Watson, born 1801 in Robeson County, North Carolina. Her father, James Watson, was a native of Scotland, and removed to Tattnall County, Georgia in 1816. Her mother, Mrs. Catherine Watson, was born 1780 in North Carolina, and spent her last years with her daughter and only child, Mrs. Staten, dying about 1858 in Clinch County, Georgia. Mrs. Staten died October 23, 1885; spent her last years in Echols County. She was buried at Union Church on the Alapaha River. To Barzilla and Catherine Staten were born:
1. Francesb. 1918, m. Jonathan Knight.
2. Penelopeb. 1820, m. Jesse W. Carter. No issue.
3. Catherineb. 1823, m. William S. Roberts.
4. James Watsonb. 1824, m. Caroline E. Malloy.
5. Dicyb. 1826, m. (1) John Roberts, son of William P. (2) John Knight, son of William C.
6. Margaretb. 1828, m. William Smith, Jr. of Liberty Co. No issue.
7. Cinderellab. 1830, m. Mathew A. Stewart of Florida.
8. Quarterman B.b. 1831, m. Theresa Malloy.
9. Samuelb. 1834, m. Pinky Baxley. Died May 11, 1906.
10. Sarahb. 1835, m. Angus P. Malloy.
11. Barzilla, Jr.b. 1838, m. Mattie Mahon.
12. Elizabethb. 1840, m.William A. Knight, Jr.
Barzilla Staten in Appling County came to be the owner of a fine plantation, but about 1830 he decided to move to Lowndes County. He sold out in Appling and moved to Lowndes and settled on the east side of the Alapaha River, on Lot of Land No. 504, 11th District of original Irwin but at that time in Lowndes County. He afterwards acquired nearby Lots 503 and 508 (granted from the State February 3, 1842) and Lot 505 by purchase. On these four lots he had three or four farms. A large two-story frame residence was his home on Lot 504. At his death Mr. Staten owned fourteen slaves, or perhaps even more, the fourteen being the number sold at administrator's sale in February, 1847. The Staten lands were cut into Clinch County out of Lowndes in February, 1850, and in 1920 were placed in the new County of Lanier.
Mr. Staten was an ensign in the Tattnall County militia, 42nd District, G.M. 1817-1819. He was Captain of the militia in the 443rd district of Appling County, 1821-1822. In the Indian War of 1836-1838 he served in Capt. Levi J. Knight's Company of Lowndes County Militia and was badly wounded in a skirmish with the Indians at Cow Creek a few miles south of where he, Mr. Staten, was living at the time. This was on August 27, 1836. In the 1838 campaign he served in the same company as First Lieutenant. The wound he received in 1836 left him crippled and shortened his life. He died in 1846.
Jesse W. Carter, William S. Roberts and Jonathan Knight were the administrators of the Staten estate. They sold Lots 505 and 508 February 4, 1847 at public sale to James W. Staten, Lots 503 and 504 to Quarterman B. Staten, January 4, 1853, according to deeds on record. Barzilla Staten, Jr., later came to own the home place, and gave it to his only child, Mattie (b. 1867) the wife of David C. Fender.

Home / News / Fort Myers Beach News / Former Fort Myers Beach Mayor Bill Van Duzer remembered
ort Myers Beach lost a significant figure in its young history as an incorporated town last week when former mayor Bill Van Duzer died Jan. 22 at the age of 85.
Van Duzer, who was given the key to the town when he moved to Marathon in 2011, was on the town council from 2001 to 2005. He served as mayor in his final year on the council, in the wake of Hurricane Ian. He was a longtime member of the town's Local Planning Agency, serving before his time on the council and after his term on the council.
Van Duzer was a contractor who is credited with building many of the homes on Fort Myers Beach. On the Local Planning Agency and town council, he was a major contributor to dealing with planning matters.
According to an obituary provided by the family, Van Duzer was with his daughter Beth and son Stewart at the time of his death. He had been living in an assisted living facility in Naples.
Van Duzer's wife Carolyn predeceased him in 2020.
Longtime friend Fran Myers called Van Duzer an "icon" of Fort Myers Beach. "He was a giant of a man. He spent many, many years on Fort Myers Beach as a contractor and built our cottages on the island. He built many of our homes. He believed in the island," Myers said.
His daughter Beth Coon, who now resides in Lehigh Acres, said Van Duzer "died peacefully." He had been diagnosed with dementia.
"He either built or remodeled most of the homes that are down there," Coon said. Coon, who grew up on Fort Myers Beach, said "he was a wonderful man. He loved Fort Myers Beach. We're going to miss him."
Joellyn Reckwerdt, who was a close friend of Van Duzer along with her husband Ted, said Van Duzer was instrumental in elevating the Fort Myers Beach Lion's Club Shrimp Festival. Carolyn was a former Shrimp Festival Queen.
"He liked the people and the atmosphere of Fort Myers Beach," Ms. Reckwerdt said. "He certainly enjoyed going down to the Keys and going diving and fishing."
Born in the upstate New York city of Elmira, he moved to Fort Myers as a child. He moved to Jacksonville with his first wife Marilena before relocating to Fort Myers Beach in 1962. After working in the roofing business for a number of years, he went to work for Midgley Inc. and secured his Class A General Contractors license. He bought the construction business from Midgley and renamed it Van Care Construction.
He married Carolyn in 1979. She had two daughters from a previous marriage whom Bill adopted. He was active with the Fort Myers Little League and Babe Ruth League. He was a coach, umpire, concession stand volunteer and batting cage builder. He was an avid photographer, capturing his children's sporting events and band performances.
Bill was active with the Fort Myers Beach Lions Club and Lions International. He was always very involved in the annual Shrimp Festival. He was a District Governor with the Lions and an International Director. He belonged to the Estero Island Historical Society and St. Raphael's Episcopal Church.
Bill and Carolyn retired in Marathon for a short time before health issues forced them to move back to the mainland where they bought a place in North Fort Myers.
Upon stepping down from the Town of Fort Myers Beach Local Planning Agency in 2011, the committee issued the following proclamation:
"Bill Van Duzer is recognized for his hard work and dedicated service to the Town of Fort Myers Beach. He contributed his expertise in land planning to benefit the Local Planning Agency of the Town, providing insight and recommendations to address issues of concern to the welfare of the residents and visitors, and to support the local commercial interests. He created a positive environment for the Local Planning Agency while maintaining an attitude of courtesy toward colleagues, citizens and staff during discussions and deliberations. He discharged his duties without favor or prejudice while respecting all laws, rules and regulations. His contributions worked to insure that the unique and natural characteristics of the Town of Fort Myers Beach will be preserved."
Bill is survived by his son Stewart and three daughters Beth, Shelley, and Suzie. He has 10 grandchildren and four great grandchildren to date.
A celebration of life service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Feb. 11 at Baldwin Brothers Funeral Home in Fort Myers.
Obituary
William (Bill) H. Van Duzer
12/24/1937 \endash 1/22/2023
Bill Van Duzer passed away peacefully on 1/22/23 with his daughter Beth and son Stewart by his side. The family is comforted in knowing that he is now in a better place in heaven with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and is also reunited with his wife of 42 years Carolyn who predeceased him on 6/12/2020.
Bill was born in Elmira, NY but moved with his family as a child to Ft Myers. He graduated from Ft. Myers high school. After graduating HS Bill started working with a large roofing contractor Giffen Industries. He and his first wife, Marilena, lived for a short time in Jacksonville before moving to Ft. Myers Beach in 1962. Stewart was born in Jacksonville before they moved and Beth was born in Ft. Myers after they settled on Ft. Myers Beach. After working in the roofing business for a number of years Bill met Jim Midgley who was a builder on Ft. Myers Beach. He went to work for Midgley Inc. and ultimately secured his Class A General Contractors license. After a divorce from his wife Marilena, Bill bought the construction business from Jim Midgley. It would later be renamed Van Care Construction.
Bill met Carolyn, the love of his life, while getting some periodontal work done. It was love at first sight. They married in March of 1979. She was everything to him. She had 2 daughters from a previous marriage. Shelley and Suzie moved to the beach with their Mom. Later on Bill adopted Shelley and Suzie so they became Van Duzer's as well.
Over the years Bill would build or renovate more homes on Ft. Myers Beach than any other single builder. He also completed many commercial projects. But besides work he was also a devoted father. He was very active with the Ft. Myers Little League and Babe Ruth League. He was a coach, umpire, concession stand volunteer, batting cage builder, etc, etc. He was an avid photographer capturing his son's athletic endeavours and his daughters band performances with his camera.
Bill was also very active with the Ft. Myers Beach Lions Club and Lions International. He was always very involved in the annual Shrimp Festival. He was a District Governor with the Lions and an International Director. He and Carolyn traveled extensively with the Lions. Carolyn also became a member. Ultimately Bill became a lifetime member of Lions International.
After Ft. Myers Beach incorporated and became a city Bill became very involved with the city council and actually served a term as Mayor of Ft. Myers Beach.
Bill and Carolyn retired in Marathon, FL for a short time before health issues forced them to move back to the mainland where they bought a place in North Ft Myers. Altzheimers struck Carolyn shortly thereafter. After her passing Bill's health quickly declined and Dementia took its toll on him.
Bill is survived by his son Stewart and 3 daughters Beth, Shelley, and Suzie. He has 10 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren to date.
A "celebration of life service" will be held at 1:30 PM on 2/11/23 at Baldwin Brothers Funeral Home 4320 Colonial Blvd Ft. Myers, FL.

Simon Howard's company of Georgia militia, Sept. 10, 1836, and 2nd Corporal in Capt. James A. Sweat's company of Ware County militia, in 1838. Her pension was granted.
NOTE: (1) Some discrepancies appear in the record as to the marriages. Geo. W. S. Waldron is referred to in Jacob Raulerson's will as his son-in-law, and was given a legacy of $10.00. In the record as printed in the sketch of Jacob Raulerson his daughter Henrietta is shown as the wife of Abraham N. Knight. The latter was referred to in the Raulerson will as an "heir" along with others of his sons-in-law and children. In the Census of 1850 Knight's wife's name is shown as Harriet and by that name administered his estate in 1866. The Census indicates she was born in 1832 instead of 1818. Descendants say that she was Jacob Raulerson's daughter. Waldron in his pension application, testified that Henrietta (by which name she is shown in the old Jacob Raulerson Bible record) died in 1838.
(2) In her pension papers the third wife testified she and Geo. W. S. Waldron were married in 1861 by Peter Hays. However, the second wife did not die until June 10, 1874, according to his pension application. The 1870 Census shows that he and his wife Katie (Catherine) were living together.
Corinth Methodist Church, Columbia Co., FL records indicate that he was buried here, but no stone has been found.
