COWART, HILLERY
1817-1884. ECHOLS.
Rev. Hillery Cowart, an early Primitive Baptist minister of Wiregrass Georgia, was born in Bulloch County, September 25, 1817, a son of Wililam B. and Telitha (Monk) Cowart (see Vol. I). He moved with his parents to Appling County when two years old, and from there to what was then Irwin but now Berrien County in 1824. He married Miss Rebecca Register in July 1838. She was a daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth Skinner Register (see Vol. I), and was born April 5, 1821. To them were born:
1. Telithab. 1839,
2. Williamb. 1841, m. Martha Johnson, daughter of William W.
3. Davidb. 1844, m. Jane Johnson, daughter of William W.
4. Eadyb. 1845, m. David Cowart May 1, 1873.
5. Perryb. 1847, m. Moved to Florida.
6. Johnb. 1848, m.
7. Annab. 1852, m. James McLane of Echols Co.
8. Jemimab. 1854, m. - Overstreet of Berrien Co.
9. Samuelb. 1857, m. Dovey Davis, daughter of William L. (Vol 1).
10. Harrisb. 1860, m.
11. Phoebeb. 1849, m.
After marriage Mr. and Mrs. Cowart settled a place in the 12th district of what was then Ware County but which in 1850 was made into Clinch and in 1858 into Echols County. This farm was located a few miles eastWardly from Wayfare Church in Echols County. He died there November 12, 1884. His wife survived and died October 17, 1890. They were buried at Wayfare church.
Elder Cowart and his wife were first members of Wayfare Primitive Baptist Church, which they were baptized into about 1848 (exact date not shown by minutes of church). Their subsequent church history was as follows: They were dismissed by letter February 5, 1853, and affiliated with Bethel Primitive Baptist Church, Echols County. He was church clerk of Bethel Church 1855-1856 and 1857-1858. He was called to the ministry by Bethel Church on September 13, 1856, but after two years the "necessary help" never attended for his ordination; so in 1858 he and his wife transferred back to Wayfare Church where they were received November 7, 1858. His ordination soon followed. He was ordained December 8, 1858, by Elders William A. Knight and Isaac D. Hutto. His first pastorate was at Bethel Church where he served 1859-1861, 1865-1873 and 1875-1879. He was also the same year (1859) called to the pastorate of Wayfare Church which he served four years. In June 1863, he was expelled but was restored October 1, 1864. He and his wife were dismissed by letter July 1, 1865, and transferred back to Bethel Church. On August 9, 1873, he was received by letter into Prospect Church, Clinch County, and she was received a month later on September 21, 1873. He was pastor of Prospect Church, 1881-1883. On March 11, 1882 they were dismissed by letter from Prospect, and transferred their membership to Ramah Church in Clinch County, where it remained until their deaths. He had been pastor at Ramah eight years when he died.
Rev. Cowart was 2nd lieutenant of the Lowndes County militia in the 904th district, 1839-1841.
Rev. Cowart's son, Samuel, was ordained to the Primitive Baptist ministry about 1893 and continued in ministerial work until his death in 1901. Another son, William, also became a Primitive Baptist elder after moving to Florida.

In his latter years he sold that out and moved again, this time to a farm three miles southeast of Adel (territory cut into Cook County, 1918.) where he lived and farmed until his death July 28, 1898. He and his wife were buried in the Adel cemetery.
Mr. Cowart was a private in Capt. John J. Johnson's militia company in the Indian War in 1840. He was exempt from military service in the Confederate Army but in 1864, the call went out for old men and beardless youth to serve in the Georgia militia to resist Sherman's invasion, and Mr. Cowart volunteered as a private in the 1st Volunteer Regiment, Georgia Militia, made up of Berrien County men. He served until the close of the war, and was granted a pension for his service in his latter years.
