GREEN, JESSE T., SR.
1818-1901 CAMDEN
Jesse T. Green, Sr. was born in Georgia in 1818, probably in Camden County near Trader's Hill, a son of Daniel Green. He married Kesiah Crews in December of 1835. Her father was killed during the Indian War, and her mother, Elizabeth Crews, eventually made her home with a son in Baker County, Florida. (wrong) Kesiah died, probably in childbirth. Elizabeth is believed to be a daughter of William Hazzard of Beaufort, South Carolina (wrong). Jesse and Kesiah had the following children:
L Hesterb. 1837, m. John Moore (2nd husband).
2. Calvinb. 1839. d. 7/28/1862. in CSA (Co. G, 4th Ga. Cav.).
3. Berien Benjamin b.1841, m. ????? ??????? .
4. William "Bill"b. 1843, m. Mary E. Stokes, dau. of Henry.
5. Kesiah "Kizzie"b. 1844, m. James Calvin Thompson.
On April 17, 1844, Jesse married Sophia Crews, a sister of Kesiah. Children of the second marriage were:
6. Jesse T., Jr.b. 3/26/1845, m. Roseanna Alexander, b. 1842, dau. of Wm. W.
7. Isiah (twin)b. 1847, died young.
8. Renah (twin)b. 1847, died young.
9. Perryb. 1849, m. Sarah "Babe" Glesson.
10. Isabellab. 1853, died young.
11. Elizabeth"Betsy"b. 1852, m. Jim Pringle.
12. Owenb. 1854, m. Jane Sellers.
13. Sallieb. 1858, m. Jeff Underhill.
14. Mary J.b. 1855, m. never married.
15. Amandab. 1862, m. Jeff Norman.
16. Nathan D."Drink"b. 1864, m. Sarah Hudson.
17. Elisha W.b. 1868, m. Nancy Wills.
Jesse T. Green, Sr., at the age of 20, enlisted as a Private in Capt. E. D. Tracy's Company, 3rd Regiment, Georgia Mounted Militia, at Centerville, Georgia, in 1838, for 3 months. Col. Revels was the Militia Commander. Green enlisted for 6 months in October of 1840, and mustered out at Trader's Hill in March of 1841. His Unit of the Militia was incorporated into the regular US Army as "Citizen Soldiers" and they were recognized as having been in the military service of the United States. He also served under Captain Isaac Bush, 1838-39, Florida Volunteers. He received a pension for this service amounting to $8.00 per month. His application, for this pension, was made in Bradford County, and his witnesses were William Underhill and N. D. Wainwright. Those witnessing his wife's claim were G. W. Kersey and W. W. Tumblin. Jesse T. Green, Sr. also served in the Civil War. He and his sons, Calvin, William, Benjamin, and Jesse, Jr. enlisted in Clinch's 4th Georgia Cavalry in 1861. He and Jesse, Jr. fought at Olustee. According to a daughter of Jesse, Jr., the battle there was the "bloodiest battle" he ever saw. This included four years of warfare, and the Battle of Atlanta. Jesse, Sr. brought his family to Bradford County about 1872, settling at Heilbronn Springs (in S 36 T5 R 21 S & E). Seven of his children reared their families in Bradford County: "Missy" (Lawtey); Perry (Brooker); Hester (Heilbronn Springs); Amanda (Lawtey); Sallie (Heilbronn Springs). William moved from Olustee to Charlton County, Georgia. Jesse, Jr. and his wife, Roseann (whose father is in the 1860 New River County Census) moved about 1880 to Nassau County, as did "Betsy" and Owen. There are no records on the others, except Mary, who lived with her parents.
Jesse T. Green, Sr. died in Bradford County on November 30, 1901. His wife, Sophia, died December 31, 1905. Both are buried in unmarked graves at Evergreen Cemetery in Bradford County. This cemetery is located on the grounds of the Florida State Prison. The old homeplace at Heilbronn is still being used by a descendant of Jesse, Sr.

From "Aunt Julia's Letter Box for the Tri-Weekly Journals Boys and Girls"
Dear Aunt Julia and Cousins:
Will you please admit a Georgia girl into your happy band of boys and girls? As this is my first attempt to write, I guess I will make my letter short. I guess I'd better describe myself: Light complexion, gray eyes, light hair, am 58 inches tall and weigh 81 1/2 pounds. I am thirteen years of age and promoted to the seventh grade. I wonder what you cousins are doing these warm days. I wash dishes and help cook. I wonder how many of you cousins have dishwashing weeks. I stay with a cousin of mine (Thelma Carter) and we live on a farm about five miles from Lake Park. I have one brother (Leo) and one half sister (Mallie). My brother is in the army. All of you cousins write to:
Your loving cousin,
LAURA CREWS.
