Charlton County Historical Notes 1972. I've found a few errors in this book so there may be errors in this section, too. It may take me awhile to type all of it but I'll try to get it all soon. Jerry Francis Crews was born in North Carolina 2-14-1824. He migrated to Georgia around 1845 and settled in Charlton County near the little Okefenokee Swamp, 5 miles Southeast of Winokur, Georgia. He married Sarah Ann Johns and they had ten Children: Jesse, Chrisie, Mary, Martha, Sibbie, Lylie, Jean, Archie, Mose and Jerry. Jerry, the youngest son, better known as Tye Crews, married Mary Crews, daughter of Bryant C. Crews and Nancy Johns. Their children were Jack, Irvin, Minnie, Nancy, Ivey and Francis. Jack Crews married Mary Crews, daughter of Lewis and Ollie Crews and their children were Georgiann, Minnie, J.W. and Maude. Irvin, Francis, Minnie and Nancy were never married. They lived with their mother on the old homestead and raised cows, hogs, farmed and naval stores. After the death of their mother, they continued to operate the farm until one by one they departed this life. Ivey Buddy Crews married Mary Jane Barber, daughter of Hattie O'Berry. Buddy operated a small farm, raised livestock and worked turpentine to support his ten children. Sometimes the going was tough but there was always something to eat, a little to wear. There was always work to be done and each one, as he grew up, carried his share of the load. Around 1940, he started driving the school bus on the Winokur route for $30.00 a month. This was and ideal job for him for he loved children. As long as one didn't make the others cry, the noise was music to his ears. He drove the bus for 17 years, resigning in 1958 die to ill health. He died at home on Sept. 7th, 1960.

Notes
General:
The earliest record of a Jesse Cruise in South Carolina is in the Roster of South Carolina Patriots in the
American Revolution
, by Bobby G. Moss, p. 222. It describes a Jesse Cruise who served 299 days in the
militia in companies commanded by Captains Joseph Johnson and Fred Womack in the period from
15 April to 1 December 1781 (C.S.; A.A. 1668; R 409). Stub Entries to Indents, No. 409, Book R., p. 68,
describes Audited Account No. 1668 as being Mr. Jesse Cruise who was issued on 3 June 1785,
Sixteen Pounds Seven and one Penny half Penny Sterling for 229 days duty in the Militia in 1781 as
per the Auditor's Accounting. In the Index to South Carolina Land Grants 1784\endash 1800, p. 34, is the record
of Jesse Cruise receiving two land grants in 1787. One is registered in vol. 15, p. 185 and the other in
vol. 16 on p. 463. A visual record of these two pieces of land appears in the two plats of Charles
Jenkins' land grants. Both of them abut the property of Jesse Cruse. The Charles Jenkins plats appear
in the papers of the Surveyor General, Unrecorded Plats for Land Not Granted, Box 3 No. 671, South
Carolina Department of Archives and History.
Jesse Cruise appears in South Carolina in the first Federal Census in 1790 in the Orangeburgh District
with one male over 16 and three males under 16. There are three females in the family and one slave.
So by 1790 he had five children and had probaby been married about ten years, and he may have
been about thirty years old. In the 1800 Federal Census he was in Barnwell County, which had been
created from Orangeburgh in 1798. He had two boys under 10, two boys between 16 and 26 and one
male over 45. There were two girls between 10 and 16 and one woman between 26 and 45. This is
the last South Carolina census Jesse2 appeared in. However, he reappears in Georgia in 1815 in
Captain James Parks District 137 in Greene County. His name and George2 W. Cruce's name appear
in An Index to Georgia Tax Digest, vol. V. Both George2 and Jesse appear in 1816 in the tax digest of
Wilkes County, Captain John Favors' District. This was probably a land investment for George2
Cruce because George buys land in Greene County in 1818. Jesse appears again, age 45 or older, in
Jesse Cruce 106
Wilkes County in the 1820 census. He had been named eligible in Laurens County, Capt. Leroy B.
Harris District on 8 March 1819. According to census records of South Carolina, Jesse had at least five
children, three boys and two girls.
The third pairing of George2 and Jesse Cruce occurs in "The Wilkes County Papers, 1773-1833" by
Robert Scott Davis, Jr., 1917 & 1983. In Section V\endash The Joseph M. Toomey Collection (1762-1873),
under the heading, "Estates," page 89: "Inventory of Estate of Owen W. Fluker, 3 Nov. 1819\endash Names
mentioned ..., and George and Jesse Crews." (Georgia Department of Archives and History, Book PP,
fos. 245, 4 May 1820).
Bobby Moss, in South Carolina Patriots in the Revolution, lists four Cruises, Isaac, Jesse, Thomas and
William Cruise. All of these, with the possible exception of William, appear to be associated with
Cruces. William may belong to us, too. William enlisted in the fifth Regiment on 18 November 1776,
and died 12 May 1777 (National Archives 853). The original story passed down in so many Cruce
families is that there were three brothers who came to America from Ireland. We don't know when
Jesse was born, only that he was old enough to have served in the militia in the Revolutionary War,
and an argument could be made that the old Jesse could just as easily be a brother to Richard1 as a
son\emdash in which case, William could be the third brother.
Jesse does not appear in the Belfast church records of Richard's family but neither did Letitia Cruce,
and this could mean that both were born before the family appeared in Belfast. Neither have we
found any pre-Revolutionary tax or deed records for Jesse2 in South Carolina. In particular, if he had
been an adult when Richard1 applied for his George III land grant, it seems likely that Jesse2 would
have applied for a royal land grant at the same time. The dates of his land grants, both in 1787,
suggest he might be a contemporary of Isaac2. Jesse obviously had a close relationship with George2,
and his son, Jesse, named his youngest son George Washington.
