Martin Turner Carter, Sr.
1832-1922
Martin T. Carter Sr. was a son of John and Lavina (last name unknown). He was born in Lowndes County Georgia Oct. 29, 1832 not long after his parents relocated from South Carolina (1830). He married twice. His first marriage was in 1854 to Nancy DeLoach, b. 1834, daughter of General DeLoach of Echols County. Martin remarried after the death of Nancy in 1868, to Mrs. Olive Rentz Lightsey, widow of John Joseph (who died in the CSA). Olive was born in 1840 and died November 25, 1917. She is a daughter of Samuel Rentz.
Mr. Carter was a faithful Confederate soldier. He enlisted in April 1862 at Savannah, Georgia, Company "K", 32 Georgia Infantry Regiment and served until February 25, 1865 when he was granted a sick furlough at Pocotaligo, SC. His pension stated he was "sick with chills and fever". For a short time, his youngest brother, Allen, served in the same company. He was unable to rejoin his command when the surrender came 2 months later.
He and his two wives are buried in Carter cemetery. His first wife, Nancy, was the first person to be buried there, her husband choosing a place on his property to bury her and this later became Sardis Church and the "Carter" Cemetery.
