CARTER, Isaac
1792-1881 LOWNDES

ISAAC CARTER was born in Colleton district, South Carolina, May 18, 1792, son of Elijah Carter. The latter died about 1875 at his home in Barnwell District, South Carolina, at the age of 107 years. In 1829-1830, Isaac with his brothers, John, Elijah and Samuel, moved to Lowndes County, Georgia, where others of the family connection had already moved. They settled on the west side of the Alapaha River in what is now Lanier and Lowndes counties, and Isaac settled near his cousin, Jesse Carter, and near Union Church on the banks of the Alapaha. Five acres of his land were given by Isaac Carter for the cemetery which is now at the church.
Isaac Carter married Mrs. Elizabeth Davis Ganos, widow of Benjamin Ganos, of South Carolina and mother of Capt. Benjamin C. Ganos, of Lowndes County, who commanded a company of Lowndes County militia during the Indian War. She was born June 10, 1788, and died June 28,1870, and was buried at Union Church (grave unmarked). To her and Isaac Carter were born only three children, all born in South Carolina:

1. John J. b. April 16, 1821, m. Angie Delores DeLoach, May 2, 1847.
2. Isaac W.b. May 10, 1826, m. Rachel Peters, daughter of William Peters, R. S.
3. Mariah b. April 17, 1829, m. James R. Allen, son of Richard.

These three children grew to maturity and married in Lowndes County and lived there all their lives except Mrs. Allen and her family. Mrs. Allen and her family later moved across the Alapaha River into what was formerly Clinch but now Lanier County, where she died.
The late J. P. Carter, of Naylor, and I. W. Allen, of Stockton, were grandsons of Isaac and Elizabeth Carter.
Mrs. Carter was a member of Union Church and was baptized into its membership December 12, 1829. She died a member.
After his first wife's death, Isaac Carter, over the objections of his sons, married again. His second wife was Miss Pollie Cox, born 1848 in Georgia, daughter of Samuel D. Cox, and she at the time of marriage was only about 25 or 26 years old and he was about 78 or 79 years old. There were two children by the second wife. Due to differences arising between him and his sons concerning his second marriage, the elder Carter sold out his fine two-story home and farm in the Naylor district of Lowndes county about 1875 and moved to Florida where he died May 1, 1881. Descendants here today have lost trace of the two children by the last marriage and do not remember their names or where they lived.

Isaac Carter when he moved to Appling county in 1821-22, settled on Ten-mile Creek in present Bacon county in the 5th land district. This property was made into Pierce county when it was created in 1858, and in more recent years into Bacon county. The home-place was on lot of land 150 in the 5th district, where Mr. Carter had a large plantation which he cultivated with the thirtyfive slaves he is said to have owned. He was also a large stockowner, owning 1900 head of cattle at his death.

Issac Carter died in 1854, and his son, Stephen, became the administrator of his estate. The estate included lots of land 150 in the 5th of Appling (at that time) and 171 in the 5th of Ware (at that time). The estate was administered in Appling Court of Ordinary.
Mr. Carter was buried on his home-place, and the family burying ground in due time became a community-used cemetery and Tenmile Baptist Church was built about 500 feet away.

Isaac was the son of Revolutionary War veteran George Carter.

In 1809 Isaac's family moved from the Colleton District on the Salkehatchie River in SC to Tattnall County, GA.

On 24 September 1814 Isaac enlisted as Private for a six months term in the 3rd Artillery Regiment, SC Militia commanded by Captain Tristram Bethea. According to War of 1812 company rolls Isaac was given a disability discharge 25 November 1814 at Haddrell's Point, SC.

After the war Isaac returned to Tattnall County, GA where he later married Nellie Teston 26 April 1820. Appling County had recently opened to settlers so the couple moved across the Altamaha River and settled in the 5th land district near Ten-Mile Creek in what is present day Bacon County. There they had a 300+ acre cattle ranch and raised 12 children. Isaac is found in Appling Co. GA census records in 1820, 1830, 1840 and 1850.

Isaac died in 1854. His son Stephen became Administrator of his estate. The estate included 1900 head of cattle, 150 acres of land in Appling County and 171 acres in Ware County, all now in Bacon County near present day Alma, GA. The estate was administered in Appling Court of Ordinary. Isaac was buried on his home place. The family burying ground in time became the community used cemetery. Ten Mile Baptist Church was built nearby. Isaac and Nellie's cabin has since been moved but still exists a few miles away. The surrounding area is still known to many as "Cartertown".
