Notes
General:
Elijah Carter was born around 1768 to 1773 in the Barnwell District of South Carolina (near Carters Ford) He was the son of Jacob Carter. The Chinkypin states Elijah lived to be approximately 107 years of age. The name of his wife is not currently known. Elijah had at least five children.

Elijah are his wife are found in St Bartholomews Parrish in the 1790 Census, along with brothers George and John. All three lived next door to one another,

A quote from Folks Huxford, Vol. III, page 362 informs the reader, "The Hon. H.D. O'Quinn wrote a series of articles in the Valdosta Times, in 1889, dealing with his recollections of the Carter family, his grandmother being a Carter. He himself spent his boyhood in Barnwell District, S.C. where his family lived, some of them living in the adjoining Colleton District. With reference to Samuel Carter and his father, Elijah, he wrote in the issue of Mar. 2, 1899: 'Old Uncle Elijah Carter was a very large, tall, bony man, rather stoop-shouldered, long arms, large hands and feet, long face, high cheekbones, small eyes and large ears, and generally considered to be the best man for manhood in the county at that time. I don't know how many children he raised…

Four of his sons Isaac, John, Elijah and Samuel, settled in Lowndes County, between 1830 and 1840; all of them raised large families….Old Uncle Elijah's death was caused by some dogs jerking him backwards off from Phillip Carter's steps, by his coat-tail and breaking his back, when in his 103rd year of age….'

Elijah served in Isham Walker's Company during the War of 1812. Mr. Carter passed away in Barnwell District, S.C.

Additional research indicate that in 1829 or 1830, the four sons of Elijah moved to Lowndes County, GA where other family members had already moved. They settled on the west side of the Alapaha River in what is now Lanier and Lowndes Counties.
