Notes
General:
Allen W. Carter was born August 19, 1847 in what was then Lowndes, now Echols County, Georgia likely on the Carter family farm. He was the youngest son of John Carter Sr. and Lavinia (maiden name unknown). Allen married Sarah E. Corbett daughter of Franklin Corbett and Winnie Stuart sometime before 1873. Allen and Sarah had nine children.

The first record of Allen appears in the 1850 Federal Census of Echols County, GA. He is three years of age and was enumerated in the household of his father, John Carter Sr.

The 1860 Echols census shows a youthful Allen, living with his parents. The following is from that schedule: CARTER, John Sr. M 66 SC Farmer 500/464, Lavinia F 62 SC Wife, Frances M. F 22 GA Seamstress, John C. M 14 GA Ploughman, Allen W. M 13 GA, Mary F 32 GA.

The next mention of Allen comes as a result of the "1864 Census for Re-Organizing the Georgia Militia". This re-organization act required that "all free white males between the ages of 16 and 60 that were not currently in the war to be listed by Company District, age, occupation, and nativity". The following is as it appears in the records for Echols County, GA, 6th Senatorial District - 1211th Militia District: CARTER, Allen W., 16 yrs. 5 mos., Farmer, b. GA.

Towards the end of the war (1865) when the call went out for boys and old men to join the war effort, seventeen year old Allen enlisted in the CSA along with eldest brother Martin T. Carter, Sr. at Charleston, SC. In the "Widows Pension" form filed Sarah, around July of 1910, his widow indicates he enlisted in Company K, 32nd Georgia Infantry. Allen was granted a furlough by Colonel Harrison. A few days before he arrived home, his company and many others surrendered at Columbia, SC marking the end of the war.

The 32nd was fighting in the "Campaign of the Carolinas" during Allen's hitch. The following are the battles engaged by the 32nd during the time of Allen's enlistment:

Pocatalico, SC - 1/15/1865
River's Bridge, Salkahatchie River, SC - 2/3/1865
Orangeburg, SC 2/11/1865 - 2/12/1865
Evacuation of Charleston, SC - 2/18/1865
Battle of Averysborough, NC - 3/16/1865
Battle of Bentonville, NC 3/19/1865 - 3/21/1865
Surrender at Bennett's House, Durham, NC 4/26/1865

Less than five years later, Allen was enumerated back Echols county this time (1870) as a married man. The schedule states: CARTER, Allen 23-M-W/GA Farmer 300/280. Sarah 19-F-W/GA Keeping House.

The 1880 census shows Allen Carter age 32 now married with children. The family was enumerated in District #1211 (Kinseys) Echols County, GA. The census showed wife Sarah E. age 27 born in GA, son Hansford, age 10, born in GA, son George, age 8, born in GA, daughter Laura, age 6 born in GA, daughter Elizabeth, age 4 born in GA, son Wiley, age 2 born in GA, and son Alfred, age 1 born in GA. Wife Sarah is pregnant at this time with a daughter, to be named after her, Sarah E (Sallie).

The Chinkypin Vol. 3 lists Allen's death as Nov.15, 1892. His headstone reads Nov. 5, 1892. He is buried in the Carter Family Cemetery in western Echols county along with wife Sarah (d. March 12, 1929) in a rather unusual layout as he is buried head-to-head with wife Sarah.

On Saturday, November 20, 1999, Allen was one of four CSA veterans honored at a ceremony at the Carter Family Cemetery in Echols. During this ceremony, a special marker was placed on his grave recognizing his service to the cause.

Notes
General:
Mrs. Beulah Carter

Mrs. Beulah Carter, a spry ninety-year-old lady, who is Mrs. Hiers sister, was interviewed a few days later. Then asked what she used to do as a teenager…..
I swept yards, washed dishes, hoed gardens, (chuckling) and picked cotton when it was ready to pick…..Went fishin' most Saturdays in the evenin' when they, Mama and Daddy, got through with us…..Sometimes there'd come a party on…..and sometimes we had sings on Fridee, Saterdee, and Sundee….

And Ma learned me to quilt…..and found out I could quilt. We minded our folks…they don't mind ya now like they did then no, they'd tear us up!
