John Smith served in the Indian War in this section, and was a private under Capt. David J. Miller, Ware County militia, 1838. Following his marriage he settled on lot of land 411, 7th district of Ware, now Clinch County. This lot and adjoining lots 410 and 419 were deeded to him by his father Nov. 1, 1842. About the same time or on Oct. 23, 1842, he bought adjoining lot 418 from Col. Elijah Mattox. He later acquired lot 416 from Joseph Lane, Nov. 19, 1847 and lot 417 from his brother, James C. Smith, Oct. 2, 1847. These acquisitions of land are shown by the Clinch County deed records. 'He sold lots 416 and 417 to Gasper J. Fulton of Savannah, after the railroad (A. C. L.) was built through 1859-60 from Savannah to Thomasville. The Fulton heirs later in the 1880s laid out the town of Argyle on lot 416. The Smith home was on Lot 411 but the plantation was on both Lots 411 and 418. About 1875, Mr. Smith sold this property to his son, Benjamin, and daughter, Mrs. Dickerson, and bought the old Peter Smith place about three miles to the west, on lot No. 376, and moved there and lived until he died June 14, 1879. Mrs. Smith survived and spent her last years with her daughter, Mrs. Dickerson, and died Feb. 24, 1905.

John Smith was a member of Cassia Lodge, No. 224, F. & A. M., at Homerville. He received the degrees in 1868 and died a member. His wife was baptized Aug. 25, 1888 into Olive Green Baptist Church, which was pastored by her son, John F. Smith; and after the disolution of that church she was received by letter Dec. 9, 1899, into the Homerville Baptist Church. She continued as a member of that church until her death.

SMITH, LAWRENCE
1781-1859
CLINCH

Lawrence Smith was born in South Carolina in 1781, and grew up in Barnwell District where he married. His wife was Nancy Rich, born 1780, in North Carolina. They had eight children:

1. Johnb. June 21, 1810, m. Elizabeth Studstill, daughter of Hustis.
2. Sarahb. April 14, 1812, m. Hiram Kight.
3. James C.b. March 23, 1813, m. (1) Margaret Smith, daughter of Charles (2) Emma McLendon, daughter of James M.
4. Catherineb. October 10, 1818, m. Peter Smith.
5. William E.b. November 27, 1820, m. (1) Martha Wester, daughter of E. P. (2) Martha Strickland, daughter of Aaron (3) Martha Jernigan, daughter of James.
6. David D.b. September 27, 1822, m. Rachel Studstill, daughterof Hustis.
7. Elbert M. T.b. August 1828, m. (1) Eady Floyd (2) Caroline Potts (3) Fannie E. Eunice August 2, 1886.
8. Nancyb. 1830, m. Elias Williams.

Mr. Smith moved to Appling County when it was first opened to settlers and lived a few years in the 4th land district. He later moved to 12th land district and granted lot of land No. 529 and settled there. During the Indian troubles of 1837-1839, he suffered the loss of his barns and other outbuildings, and all his produce or crop at the hands of the savages. His home was forted up soon after and became a place of refuge for fleeing settlers during those days. He was a private in Capt. D. J. Miller's company of Ware County militia in 1838.
Mr. and Mrs. Smith were members of the Methodist Church. The pastor of the Ware County Mission kept a monthly preaching appointment at the Smith home for some years in the 1840's and 1850's. He served as a circuit steward for several years.
About 1855, the first wife died and Mr. Smith married again October 19, 1856. The second wife was Miss Mary A. E. Braswell, born 1829 in Florida. Two children were born by her: Laura E., born 1857, and Franklin L., born 1859. Mr. Smith died October 19, 1859, and his wife later with her two children returned to Florida, where she married Daniel Milton of Columbia County. Considerable litigation developed between her and the older children over her claim to the home place property. The two oldest sons, John and James C., were administrators of the estate. The litigation was finally settled about 1870.
In the creation of Clinch out of Ware County in 1850, the Smith plantation was placed in the new county.
Mr. Smith and his first wife were buried in a family burying ground on the home place north of the residence about 200 yards. The graves are unmarked.
